About

The George Hotel, Restaurant & Bar offers fantastic food, real ales and comfortable accommodation near the beautiful town square.

Story

WELCOME! The George is the Keswick’s oldest coaching inn, carefully restored to its former glory. The hotel consists of a welcoming wood beamed bar, a cosy seating area with an adjoining a-la-carte restaurant and quality accommodation in all of its 12 en-suite bedrooms.

An 17th century coaching house, The George was the Inn of choice for the Earl of Derwent Water on a journey to join the Jacobite rebellion, from which he never returned. The impression of the 330-year history of the Inn is indisputable, in the heavily beamed rooms full of antique objects and furniture.

The bar is perfect for a quiet drink of the local Jennings cask ales and the hotel's own ale, alongside homely fires, which glow through winter nights. We offer some of the best food to be found anywhere in Keswick and not only are we home to the legendary Gigantic Pies (have a look at the photos!!) but we also offer traditional food with a modern twist, using locally sourced and produced ingredients. All our dishes are prepared with care and beautifully presented, to be enjoyed in the comfortable dining room or in the cosy bar areas – the choice is yours!

The George is also ideal for those seeking a distinctive stay in the Lake District, ideally located for your holiday or short break - within a short walking distance to Derwent Water and with a number of fantastic walks in the surrounding hills. We also offer free parking & have permits for a long stay car park very close by.

So come and fill your lungs with clean, fresh Lakeland air and we'll make sure you're well fed, watered and rested.

Lovely old hotel in the heart of Keswick. Very friendly people who were welcoming and helpful. Rooms were spacious and the shower was clean and hot. Comfortable bed with nice linen. We had 2 dogs and a water bowl, bed and treats were provided. Excellent location for shops, walking and lakeside. Would go back.Rooms: 4/5
We called in for a drink in a Sunday afternoon. We had eaten lunch earlier but the smell of the food was so good we had to order something. We chose the baked Camembert with a few sides . Delicious! Service excellent, very warm friendly pub.Service: 5/5
We called in after a walk for a drink and a meal. My steak and ale pie was excellent, as was the mash, gravy and cabbage. My wife's salmon was very good as well. Are the few negative reviews posted by customers or competing pubs?Really helpful and friendly service too, will definitely call on our next visit to Keswick.Service: 5/5
Had supper early on a Friday during our Feb break to Keswick. It is under new management but they’ve kept the infamous cow pie on the menu which is a holiday landmark for us. Still as tasty and over-indulgent as ever. Staff were great. There’s no way to add a tip if you are paying by card which was a bit embarrassing, so bring some cash for a tip if you go as I am sure you’ll enjoy the meal and service as much as we did :
Staff were nice under bad coditions. No breakfast served any more, poor food served for evening meal. Beer was nice. Rooms very tired. Bed linen is clean but worn, mine had a hole in it. Not worth the money I'm afraid. Shame it's always been a favourite.Rooms: 1/5
Sadly this place is nothing like it used to be. My husband had the pie and it was a sorry affair compared to the amazing cow pie you used to get there. I had the fish and chips which were very underwhelming. My last of many trips there I’m sorry to say.
What a fab 2 day stay at The George. Was a special birthday treat from my sister Carol, Cat was amazing very helpful & funny, all the staff was so caring, & very helpful, food was amazing, I have two dogs & to find such a great dog friendly pub is fantastic. Be back very soon. Debbie x
Walked to Keswick from Threlkeld along the Old Railway Line and needed to have food before the return walk. Had Burger and Sandwiches which were very nice, pleasantly surprised. It did feel a little bit expensive but it was in Town centre. Thank you Safety: Very Friendly Walkability: Easy access from Town.
Thought give this place a try and so glad we did. 6 adults 3 dogs. What a friend and warm welcome we received. 2 large breed dogs aswell. Very lovely old worldly traditional pub. Due to having dogs sat in the bar area. Large lot of space area not actual restaurant. Service was great. Just order at the bar collect your drinks. Simple great service no stress so perfect place and made to feel extremely welcome. Good menu choices and also had a separate Sunday dinner menue. Very well priced. Well definitely be back and looking to stay next time 2. N/a Food & drinks: Great double side menu great prices lots of choice
Sadly the famous quality food at the george is no more. First tiime in over 20 years I've seen the restaurant virtually empty on a Friday and Saturday night. Says a lot. Rooms are available but no breakfast. Doesn't seem like the management can value a room plus a tenner for breakfast in favour of cheaper room rates just add a tenner it's not hard Seems sterile... No curios or trinkets... Lost its 16th century atmosphere. Sad.
