Been any times. Excellent service and awesome food. Best fish & chips in the area, nice moist flavoursome chicken kebabs, lovely ribs and lamb shanks and nice kids meals. They also get their ice cream from Lewis of London, which is the best ice cream going.
Been going to this place and it has not changed in the way they conduct their culinary skills. The crispy mushrooms taste the same as they did the day I tried em years ago. There fish cake with poached eggs very well made and taste really good. The new fish dish Teriyaki Salmon with sorba noodles beautifully executed dish. Excellent place for traditional and pub food.
Great food. Reasonable price and a car park is a must as this is very popular. Classic pub food. Efficient service, will go back. Returned in summer and the garden was a delighted, really not disappointed, one of my favourite
A very warm welcome from the team, well heated areas and the food is amazing. Lots of seating areas. Affordable menu as well..
Enjoyed a tasty late lunch at The Gate with a choice of the tables dotted around the many delightfully warm open fires and log burning stoves. The welcome was as warm as the burning fires as was the surprisingly spicy Cajun chicken burger! Despite being sat in the end closest to the busy road; we couldn’t hear the traffic at all and really enjoyed watching the endless stupidity of many drivers through the sash window as we enjoyed our lunch. The pub doesn’t take bookings at all and given the carpark is always so full and chaotic it has always put us off visiting, but a break in the chaos gave us the opportunity see why it is always so manic; The delicious meals, the toasty fires, friendly team and fair pricing. There is an abundance of tables to choose from with a mix of smaller ‘rooms’ and larger areas like the conservatory. As it happens there is more parking available nearby that perhaps isn’t such a war zone!
Having believed the spot of the Gate pub had been a tollgate, Mummy had always assumed this would be a very small pub, not much more than what you see from the road that almost passes through the roadside façade! Paranoid, for decades of busses crashing into said roadside wall, Mummy had avoided this pub until now! So, with trepidation, we ventured onto the corner of Barnet Road and Hendon Wood Lane. We found that in fact, the pub is rather large. And most of it safely distanced from the road! The gate that once stood on this point was simply to keep the animals under control. Though, this didn’t appear to work with human animals! Sat on the table next to us, were a rather raucous group of humanoids. And a very quiet dog. We mummy, myself and a friend of Mummy, were just about to order as the wildebeests approached the neighbouring table. We almost chose not to order, but persevered. The group were friendly and, for this, I feel bad for my initial illthoughts. Opting for garlic bread and the Halloumi and avocado wrap, we were satisfied by the size, and amount of Halloumi and salad filling. However, we were all a little miffed to find a miserly teaspoon low-heaped amount of avocado. If the had been a shortage of avocado then perhaps better to mention that there would only be a tiny amount of the titled ingredient so to give customers the choice to order something else. If this is the usual amount the shame of the Gate! Staff is welcoming a friendly. With its fire place and homely decor, I would happily come here again, but would likely not order anything with avocado in it.
Lovely meal with friends .food was delicious. Service was great and very friendly staff.
We had the beef and the turkey Sunday roasts. The beef was dry, overcooked, and not good tasting - more pot roast than roast beef. The turkey not much better. The potatoes tastes a tad funny, and texture wise felt as if they had been sitting around for a while looked crispy but were soft. The vegetables were OK but did not taste butter glazed as advertised. The gravy was decent at least. It's been a very long time since I've left any food on the plate, but here I did. Dissapointing. Service was nice and the venue nice as well, hence the 2 stars.
Lovely venue. Lovely garden. Cosy out of the way pub. A friend said it's owned by an Irish lady. Also said people "complained" servings were too big. Mine was just right. I finished my food, which says a lot. Normally, I can't finish anything from the pub kitchen. I ordered a Sirloin Caesar. Basically, Caesar's Salad with Sirloin Steak. Menu said 250g so it won't be too big a serving. Salad serving was just right. Steak was done right, but felt temperature was off. Like the steak has been sitting on the cold salad for a few minutes and has cooled down. Maybe I'm being too critical. Dressing is "their own version" so I can't really say anything except it wasn't bad. Croutons were superb. Garlic bread was really good. Onions didn't work for me. I ordered an extra side of onion rings, which was excellent. I wanted to ask for mayonnaise or maybe tartare sauce but the server was in a hurry. Staff were polite but a bit abrupt judging by the 3 servers I encountered. They were very attentive of the other clients, but I had to stand and approach them to pay my bill. I think I might have gone too far north.
Came here for a Sunday lunch. There was a queue and had to wait 25 minutes so grabbed drinks from the bar. The place is nicely decorated and cosy. Car park is tiny though so had to find off road parking and walk. Food was great, loved the minted lamb and gravy! Customer service was slow, maybe not enough waiters for the amount of people - however they were friendly.
