The Coliseum

Story

This pub is the former Coliseum cinema which opened in 1913 and screened its last film in the 1990s. The first permanent film show in Abergavenny was around 1912, when a Victorian corrugated-iron hall was used as the Picture Palace. The following year, the Abergavenny Coliseum Company acquired land in Lion Street and The Coliseum opened on 3 November 1913. In mid 1989, the cinema’s stalls were converted to shops, with a cinema above. By 1998, The Coliseum had become a bingo hall, with various shop units, and is now this Wetherspoon pub.

Wetherspoons right in the heart of Abergavenny. Typical menu with good local atmosphere and interesting building history. This one used to be a old cinema
A solid Wetherspoons. Service was quick and efficient despite it being absolutely rammed. Tables clean and staff were very proactive in doing rounds to remove dishes and glasses that you were finished with. Generally seemed to have a lot more staff than most Wetherspoons pubs - maybe they employed more people for the busy Christmas period.nnFood was quickly delivered to the table and what exactly what you'd expect: no thrills and good enough for the money - especially given how cheap a decent pint of cider is here.
Went in today for breakfast. Asked for bacon to be well done. Came and it looked as it was just quickly cooked. Very pale not well done at all. The drinks machine was running out of hot chocolate and asked for them to fill it back up. The gentleman said yes he would look at it after he had just cleared a table. 10 minutes later after watching him just carrying on with things I asked someone else who then went and asked him to do this. He did go, so that was then nearly 20 minutes later. So don't be going there again.
Really liked this Spoons. It's very airey & light & well appointed. It was an old cinema before being converted. I could have happily stayed here all day as it was so relaxing. We had the breakfast muffin deal with a cuppa which was lovely then headed to Pembroke Castle for the day.
Breakfast items were barely warm, never seen egg yolks so small, could have been sparrow eggs, disappointing.! Needs to get food from kitchen to Diner much quicker.?
