Brilliant night out. Elegant Ball room. Good location with transport links and free parking. High class entertainment. I love the band and Champagne Charlie! Tasty food. Good value for money comparing with similar events that I have attended. Nothing too much trouble for the staff. Guests and staff go into the effort of dressing up in period. I will be back with friends. Thank you to the organizer.
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS EVENT. Poorly run event. I paid £170 for entry and a 3 course meal. I did not realise when I booked that if you don’t upgrade your table with a bottle of Prosecco for £80 more you will be seated with random people. When we arrived I asked if this could be changed, to which they did. However the member of staff Magda who dealt with this was extremely rude. She spoke to me poorly and told me to “put a smile on my face and get on with it”: she proceeded to give me dirty looks through the night along with the other staff members!! The entertainment started 25 minutes late, the food is shocking, you’d get better in Aldi or Tescos! The drinks are expensive in there too, to which we’re all flat. The event was located in Balham, and the venue was very strange and not very nice. It felt as if the customers made 100 times more effort than the actual event did. I have since sent a complaint email to the manager Clayton who has completely brushed me off despite Magdas behaviour making me feel so uncomfortable that I went home early. If you want a proper jazz event go to Ronnie Scott’s, because this is a just make shift rip off.
As several other reviewers have commented - the vibe, event set-up and music is really great. But the food - more specifically the 'dinner' - has to rank as perhaps the worst value purchase I've ever made. To get the ticket including a dinner cost, by my calculation, an extra £45. *No drinks* are included with the dinner in that price. I know fine dining restaurants that will do three courses cheaper. But for that price we got three courses of what I think can best be described as school canteen food: a 'smoked salmon roulade' with about two square centimetres of smoked salmon, a main course with canned/frozen vegetables hard to tell which as I could only eat a mouthful, and a bowl of chopped up fruit or two inch square 'apple pie' for dessert. I wish I'd taken photos, because it had to be seen to be believed, although they wouldn't convey the total absence of any flavour in anything bar the watermelon which the management can't take much credit for, since the watermelon does most of the work. How *anyone* could think it acceptable to charge £45 for this just blows my mind. This is so sad, because I'd love to love The Candlelight Club, and were it a new outfit I'd give some benefit of the doubt - but we were attending its '13th Birthday party'. So at this point this is just remorselessly price gouging those of your attendees unfortunate not to have learnt by now not to order the dinner option. Now, I stress: the music and host were really great, and the ambiance was cool. The drinks were a bit pricey, but not too bad and there was an option to buy a £50 wristband to then get most drinks free, which will probably make sense for many. By just putting the food out of our mind, we were able to have a good time. But the food offering compared to its price was just a total, and insulting, joke. From a consumer perspective, the Candlelight Club would do better to just avoid offering cooked food at all: it must be a hassle, and the event could easily start at 7.30/8 and people could eat beforehand. And one can always offer cheese boards and charcuterie and stuff. But anyway, if you decide to go, remember the golden rule: *do not order the dinner*!
A fun 1920s dress up night out with excellent entertainment, dancing, evening hosted by the fab Champagne Charlie, would highly recommend
I am afraid yo say it was a huge disappointment under all fronts except for the music. I went to the event on 20/05 Location: the ballroom was in a sketchy place in Bahlam, when my group got there we all thought we got the wrong address. Honestly they should be spending a bit more to secure a decent location, given the price Dinner: we decided to have dinner there.. the food was barely edible, and the service so bad. We had to wait an hour and half for the main, which looked and tasted lime hospital food. We had to ask for our food like 10 times while the tables around us were enjoying coffees and teas.. Music: the band was great. Service: I had a feeling the while thing was organised by a bunch of improvised hosts throwing a party Decorations: imagine a very cheap birthday party Overall a very "cheap" experience in spite of the expensive ticket, definitely not up to London standard. Honestly i cannot believe this thing has been going on for years.
Really great night... was a surprise from my girl friend for my birthday. Amazing band, food and cocktails were 10/10.
Venue was quite a way out of central London- Balham, which wasn’t great. Vibe and music was very good. The food was appalling and at £205 per head, you could get better value for money elsewhere and decent food, this just felt like budget supermarket offerings.
What an amazing night New Year’s Eve party. I would like to say a massive thank you to all the staff that made this wonderful night possible. The food was amazing the service was excellent all the staff were polite and happy to help you if you needed anything. Thank you for a wonderful night I can’t wait for the next one
It was a fun night but don't order the food. We booked approx. 6 months in advance and yet they still weren't able to get tables big enough for our party of 20 which is terrible considering you pay extra for the table. Instead of giving us the meals we ordered, they supplied trays of 'sharing platters' which meant we had to get up and share with another table in our party. They had no idea of quantities, the food was coming at all different times, it was a shambles and resulted in one member of staff being very rude to us because they hadn't planned properly for the group size. It was chaos for about 1-2hours. Kind of ruined the night a bit. I bought a wristband for drinks which meant my options were limited, but I think it was worth it for the cost. The music was alright, they played some random stuff, but their jazz renditions of modern songs went down well and lots of people were on the dancefloor which was great. They also had a clairvoyant which was cool. Everybody there dressed up, it was a really good turn out, and in the dark it did look quite like a speakeasy looked like a village hall in the daylight.
I took part to the Candelight Club 13th Birthday celebratory event. I had the perfect evening, a genuine immersive experience positively contrasting with all the money-grubbing, basic foodie and cringe experiences across London, filled with people who enjoyed playing with the 1920s aesthetic and wanted to truly have fun The performers made the whole experience magical, the live music made us all dancing until late in the night. Loved it!
