Tewkesbury Abbey

Story

The Abbey Church of St Mary the Virgin, Tewkesbury, (commonly known as Tewkesbury Abbey), in the English county of Gloucestershire, is the second largest parish church in the country and a former Benedictine monastery. It is one of the finest examples of Norman architecture in Britain, and has probably the largest Romanesque crossing tower in Europe.Tewkesbury had been a centre for worship since the 7th century, becoming a priory in the 10th. The present building was started in the early 12th century. It was unsuccessfully used as a sanctuary in the Wars of the Roses. After the Dissolution of the Monasteries it became the parish church for the town. George Gilbert Scott led Restoration in the late 19th century. The church and churchyard within the abbey precincts includes tombs and memorials to many of the aristocracy of the area.Services have been high church but now include Parish Eucharist, choral Mass and Evensong. These are accompanied by one of the church's three organs and choirs. There is a ring of twelve bells, hung for change ringing.

A stunning building on the outside and magnificent within. Well worth a visit. The grounds are lovely too. I was fortunate enough to attend a choral concert given by the City of Birmingham Choir and the acoustic of the space was incredible, especially with the organ playing with 'all the stops out'. A memorable visit.
A magnificent Benedictine monastery building that reflects the rich architecture. You feel calm and peace. Well worth to visit. Easy to accessible from M5 20 minutes drive from Gloucester. The window paintings are awesome.
Such a beautiful pub. The staff were pleasant, prices are fair. The garden backs onto the river and looks so lush. Toilets are really clean. Food is really nice.
What a stunning building both inside and out. Lots to look at on the inside and some lovely gardens on the outside. Free to enter, donations appreciated.
Beautiful place with stunning architecture. Visited Sunday morning when services were happening so some parts inaccessible but the bell ringing was a lovely treat. Sadly coffee shop was closed andI had to walk a good distance to find somewhere open.
