Techniquest

About

Sensational science every time!

Story

Techniquest is the UK’s longest established science centre.

Founded in 1986, by Professor John Beetlestone and his colleagues from Cardiff University, its first site was the gas showroom opposite Cardiff Castle (now Burger King).

In 1988 it moved to a pre-fabricated industrial building in Cardiff Bay, with 100 exhibits; it was here that it launched its education programmes for schools.

In 1995 it moved to its current site, the UK’s first purpose-built science centre, in Cardiff Bay. The building was formerly a heavy engineering plant; Paul Koralek of ABK Architects designed Techniquest around the framework of the original building.

TECHNIQUEST TODAY
Techniquest builds its own exhibits in its workshops in Cardiff. It is one of the leading commercial exhibit builders in the UK, selling exhibits and programmes to science centres around the world. This commercial activity is an essential income stream for delivering Techniquest’s mission.

Techniquest was the first science centre in the UK to have Governing Member status in the Association of Science and Technology Centres (ASTC).

Mission

Techniquest’s mission is to embed science in Welsh culture through interactive engagement. We provide a range of services to schools and teachers to complement formal education provision in Wales and work extensively with public audiences.

Brilliant place too bring the kids. 5 and 7, had amazing time. Older ones will appreciate it too. All practical science learning and experiments. Plenty of adults were having great fun!
It is a family-friendly interactive science center that offers hands-on exhibits and educational programs to explore science in a fun and creative way. Founded in 1986 by John Beetlestone, it is Wales' first science center, established to make science education more accessible to the public. Originally located in central Cardiff, it moved to its current location in 1995, providing a larger and more modern facility.
A great place to visit on a rainy day! Lots and lots to do, hands on activities very much like 'Wonderlab' at the Science Museum in London but bigger and better! Facilities are good, especially the free cloakroom where you can leave buggies and coats.
Best interactive museum I've been to for Kids up to 14
All 3 kids loved the planetarium, they're 7 and 9. My husband was gutted we had to leave. The Ocean talk was awesome and really got my girl interested in science. Will say get there for 10am as the car park over the road was empty!
