St. Fagans National Museum of History

Story

St Fagans National Museum of History, commonly referred to as St Fagans after the village where it is located, is an open-air museum in Cardiff chronicling the historical lifestyle, culture, and architecture of the Welsh people. The museum is part of the wider network of Amgueddfa Cymru – National Museum Wales. It consists of more than forty re-erected buildings from various locations in Wales, and is set in the grounds of St Fagans Castle, an Elizabethan manor house. In 2011 Which? magazine named the museum the United Kingdom's favourite visitor attraction.HistoryThe museum was started in 1946 following the donation of the castle and lands by the Earl of Plymouth. It opened its doors to the public in 1948, under the name of the Welsh Folk Museum. The museum's name in Welsh (also meaning "Welsh Folk Museum") has remained unchanged since that date, whereas the English title was modified to Museum of Welsh Life, thereafter St Fagans National History Museum, and again to its current nomenclature. The brainchild of Iorwerth Peate, the museum was modelled on Skansen, the outdoor museum of vernacular Swedish architecture in Stockholm. Most structures re-erected in Skansen were built of wood and are thus easily taken apart and reassembled, but a comparable museum in Wales was going to be more ambitious, as much of the vernacular architecture of Wales is made of masonry.

An amazing living museum of Welsh history. Property throughout Wales destined for destruction is slowly and painstakingly taken down brick by brick and rebuilt here. An altogether incredible history, with baker, funfair, ironmonger, church amongst others. The high rope adventure park looks outstanding but sadly isn't open yet. Wearing Wellington boots is perhaps wise. Although free to get in there is a suggested donation of £5, which is well worth the money, but what isn't is the extortionate price of food. Bringing a picnic might be more sensible. All in all a great day out for all the family. Incidentally, a Cardiff pub is due to be built here in the next couple of years.

A fabulous place! Buy bread from an artisan baker, see a medieval church, visit a row of cottages & see how they developed over the years. Then there's the blacksmith, the Victorian chapel, the farm, the castle..... It's a fantastic day out for just £5 car park fee. The bus stops right outside the entrance (32A, I think) & there's a good service. There's a cafe & gift shop, plenty of toilets, it's all accessible & staff are friendly & knowledgeable. Please give a donation if you can; it's really well worth it. I've been there loads of times over the years & I still haven't seen it all - it keeps evolving. I understand they are reconstructing one of Cardiff's famous tiled pubs at the moment. When it is finished the brewery will be opening it as a proper old pub (I don't suppose the prices will be in old money though!) It's a really great museum. Go there, you'll love it!

Next visit I will make sure I spend a day there. Loved the old stone cottages. The smell of the real lit coal fire as you enter the door, brought back memories of my Gran. Great play areas for children young and older. The olde world shops as they would have been, selling jams, pickles Welsh cakes and lots more, sweets from sweet jars hand made chocolate novelties, well worth a visit. I will be back. Free to go in, they make some profit from shops and cafes to help cover running costs. Big car park disable friendly.

A lovely family day out great facilities and even though we visit regularly there is always something new to see. It's free entry but the cafe and extras or very pricey 1 black coffee and one sandwich costing £8.60 so if your on a budget take a picnic , there are plenty of picnic tables dotted around and lovely spots to sit. It's a lot of walking but there is wheelchair access to most of the museum . Highly recommend, especially in good weather
