It was my birthday trip and at Talbot hotel we stay two nights. I asked before very nice room for my birthday and I got directly that room that I was imagined. Every day we got clean room, clean towels and coffee milks and water. Breakfast was very fresh and delicious. At first evening at dinner we tried steak. For steak I will give 4 stars from 5. Steak was with bone and one side of the steak was perfectly tender but biggest side unfortunately no. But this is place where I would like to return.
We had a last min date night spent here. And we are so glad we did, everything was just perfect. Upon entering the room there was calming opera music playing which was a nice touch. Room was spacious and well laid out. With coffee machine, bottle of water each as well as biscuit, choc bar etc. Lovely en-suite with bath and shower over. For a building built in 1600s it's been tastefully modernised throughout. We ended up having dinner there. Perfectly cooked, we had 3 courses and a bottle of wine. Prices were expected no major shocks. Service was on point. Waitresses worked fast and hard to make sure no-one waited long for anything. Oundle is a beautiful place in the evening and this hotel really boosts that as you'll see from the few pics I took. I can't recommend this hotel enough. We will 100% be back again soon.
I just love this hotel chain. This is the fifth hotel of theirs I've stayed in and I just knew The Talbot would be as fabulous as the others! I was there last night for my 50th birthday and they upgraded my husband and i to their suite. Gorgeous. Thank you for a great birthday. xxxRooms: 5/5
My partner and i had, had a rather bad day and needed a hotel with our dog for the night. I am so pleased we found The Talbot and Gail. Plans changed throughout the day and all were accepted by Gail and plans made to help us. Bare in mind this was New Years Eve! Gail has exceptional customer service skills and has a genuine nature of helpfulness she is more than an assett to the Hotel. Gail understood our "bad day" and made plans for us to have an evening meal when we did arrive, even though it was a set meal event as it was NYE! When we were concerned we had not got evening wear with us, she accommodated us and our dog in a quiet area of the restaurant so we did not feel out of place as we were concerned. We thank Kelly the GM of the restaurant for assisting also and checking we were ok during our meal. I feel Gail 'felt' our misfortune with us and arranged a welcome gift in our room-it is these added extras that made us feel so welcome that made our stay beyond our expectations for such a short notice booking. We stayed an extra night due to Gail, and the other staff's care and consideration. We ate 2 evening meals and 2 breakfasts and they were all exceptional-hats off to the chef who we believe was short staffed-the food was beautiful! The location is quaint, full of history and so so peaceful we felt very safe and comfortable. The assistance of the personnel in this hotel made our misfortune all the better for being there! We can not express how grateful we are and no words will thank Gail enough for the extra,s and warm hugs! Even the other residents were warm and friendly-we have had such a positive experience and we are very grateful x Thank you!
Lovely stay at the Talbot. Also managed to take advantage of the bar and a bite to eat here. Great service throughout, though disappointing, like a growing trend of businesses, that they don’t take cash. Also, again disappointingly like a growing number of businesses, they automatically add a 10% service charge to all food orders. I’m used to this for parties of 6 or more but not small orders.
Stunning hotel, excellent for cleanliness, lovely breakfast selection and beautiful cooked breakfast. Rooms superb, decorated tastefully, bar with log fires, service and friendliness excellent. Location in heart of Oundle is great for exploring the town and surrounding villages. Highly recommended, can't wait to stay again.Rooms: 5/5
A very curious historic building which I believe is 400 years old. Lots of character, the paved courtyard is probably buzzing in the warm months. We visited in November, and enjoyed our stay with our two dogs. Food was superb. The café is also really nice, was lovely to hang out there and devour pastries before setting off on a trip to Cambridge. The town of Oundle is pretty,
Rooms, service and location all excellent. Sadly food brought end rating down to 4 stars as there were issues with portion size, items missing and items overcooked and inedible. We were a party of 4 and enjoyed our stay.Rooms: 5/5
My wife & I stayed over at this beautiful hotel, for one night to celebrate my sister in laws birthday, a family get together. The Talbot hotel is steeped in history; The executioner of Mary Queen of Scots stayed at this hotel the night prior to her beheading at Fotheringhay castle in February 1587. The hotel you see now stands on the same site, and there are still many connections to Queen Mary, including a stair finial allegedly etched with a crown by her the staircase reputedly taken from the demolished castle2 superb paintings & a beautiful mural. Everything, including the bedrooms bar & restaurant are first class here. The staff are friendly & welcoming, so why only 3 stars ? It must be said the food portions were very minimal considering the cost, & the service slow. These along with the lack of parking are the only legitimate complaints I can make.
Be prepared for a let down, pre-booked meals come out late, pre-booked meals come out tepid. Waiting staff bring the food to the end of a long table 15 seated and it takes approximately 10 minutes for all 15 meals to be served, it wasn't helped by the waiting staff standing at the tables end calling out the meals without having people's attention. There was no presence, no walking down the table communicating. The whole atmosphere felt wrong, it seems the theme is kinda mixed up in this place. Apparently it's smart to dress staff in tweed waistcoats, white shirt/blouses and jeans, the next step would be to wear the traditional checked shirts that you see at all the farmers markets, this way you can combine the money look along with the working country look. Couple this with a few Stags head busts on the walls, a bunch of antlers on the light fittings and a garish wall painting you now have the image of the restaurant. Myself and my wife left the table to go to the bar to order drinks table service was nearly non existent, on the way to the bar we stopped at the top of the small narrow flight of steps to allow three waiting staff to ascend, not one of the three acknowledged us with a thank you for doing so. Finally to add insult to injury a service charge was placed on the bill, albeit they offered to remove it and did so without a quibble. My personal view on a service charge is as follows: It is down to the customer to decide how much and IF they want to pay a service charge. Never add a service charge, it is wrong to place a customer in an awkward position. If you feel the need to add a service charge then you are blatantly admitting that you cannot pay your staff a justified wage in todays day and age. Imagine going into a supermarket to do a weekly shop, then having a service charge added, when all the staff have done is quite simply what they are paid to do. It's frustrating. Before anyone tries to shoot me down for my opinion, I am a classically trained chef who left the industry some years ago to pursue an alternative career. The food once served was very good, the service was lacking. Overall I wouldn't recommend and I won't be going back.
