Went here for the wife's birthday for Disneys Beauty & the Beast Musical. Wife said it was the best musical she's ever been too. The place itself is super easy to find with parking literally about 2 minutes away which cost £2.50 for 3 hours we were there. Bought a rose wine and a pint, came to £14 in total. But what do you expect? Everything is expensive in places like this. The venue is very easy to navigate around. Sign posts everywhere for what you need. And the stage was a very interesting colour scheme. Needs a good clean in places though.
Saw hairspray and the experience was absolutely amazing, due to covid there was many things put in place such as time slots, showing covid pass on arrival, wearing mask etc, and I felt extremely safe despite the theatre being packed. I can’t wait to come again in February for beauty and the beast!!!
Lovely theatre. Smaller than others, but that makes it cosy. Sat in the dress circle we had an excellent view of the stage. Staff were friendly and welcoming at the door. Yorkishire crisps, popcorn & ice cream were a lovely treat while watching the show.
I saw Les Miserables on Nov 15, 2022 in it’s first and I hope not it’s only run and I think it was the cherry on top of the theatres cake. All the hard work of the founders and management down the years has led up to the moment it could attract the best shows. Don’t believe me? Look inside. On High St. West close to the city centre, near to the A138 and close to a handy Holiday Inn so is very good for not only the actors, but anyone from outside the region who wants to visit the city for a short time which will involve seeing a show and shopping, the theatre is a TARDIS. Huge in the inside with bars and toilets for every area of the main theatre itself. Long corridors leading everywhere well sign posted. There is even a lovely pizzeria. By the entrance is a merchandise stall selling a wide range of T-shirts, mugs etc. with the logo of the show. All very clean and immaculate. Beautiful theatre and a jewel in the crown of Sunderland.
I love the Empire, what a fantastic building and atmosphere. I last visited to see Les Miserables with my mother who now has very much reduced mobility. We also were unable to get seats together but I needn't have worried as the staff looked after her so well, finding somewhere to store her walker and accompanying her to her seat whilst also just being really lovely and friendly.
Such a beautiful theatre, and I really love the theatre but I had a very restricted view the whole time, the seats aren't very comfortable and there is restricted space, the bar and snacks are so overpriced expected, but still shocking but the atmosphere and performance made up for any negative experience. I saw Dreamgirls tonight and absolutely adored it!
It's good to be back! Theatre is as beautiful as ever, lots of character. Staff all friendly and helpful. Staggered entry times ahead of the show so didn't feel excessively busy. Pre ordered ice cream for the interval at the bar and I'd definitely recommend doing that again as it's simply there on a shelf for you to pick up :
Fantastic experience. Went to see Les Miserables with my mother and 10yr old daughter. The staff were fantastic, really friendly, helpful and engaging. The place was easy to find, clean and tidy. The seats were comfortable with a great view of the stage and the performance itself was out of this world. All in all one of the best nights of our lives and can't wait to go again for other upcoming performances.
This is one of my favourite local theatres. While small, the interior is comparable to those on the west end, with gorgeous detailing on the walls and ceiling. The bar is decorated eloquently with reasonably priced drinks for Theatre. I have seen several shows here, and have sat everywhere from front row to the Gallery. Even the restricted view seats provide an excellent feel for the show, the acoustics are beautiful throughout the theatre and every show I have seen here has been a memorable experience.
Beautiful old theatre that was lovingly restored and improved to bring the best of the West End to the people of the North East. Some of the seats have a restricted view but you're warned of that at the point of purchase and being a Victorian theatre legroom is sparse. Prices are excellent though, offering affordable tickets to all and even the best views aren't overpriced. The staff are great too. Our usher last week for Rock of Ages was very helpful. Beer prices are scandalous however, I would recommend waiting until after the show for a pint elsewhere.
