As a new starter, I could not have asked for a warmer or more positive welcome to the team and college. Everyone I have spoken to has been kind, helpful and supportive during my first few weeks, which has truly allowed me to settle in quickly. After viewing the website and the values the college strives to achieve, I knew this would be an organisation where I can truly feel at home.
Thought I would write a review to say how good the team have been for distance learning at Stephenson's college. Sophie is my tutor, and she is a very good teacher and I have passed all of my courses with flying colours. I have done quite a few courses now and will look forward to doing more in the future. I would definitely recommend distance learning as its government funded- free courses, so you are gaining experience and certificates for free! I am very happy with the service, and i would like to say thanks again to Sophie for being the best! Emily x
A really nice campus, with state of the art facilities for a wide range of different courses. The staff are really friendly and approachable! I really recommend :
Very poor college. Staff haven't a clue what they are doing - completely disorganised and even managers responsible for those staff Debbie Tour fail to return phone calls. I imagine it will be chaos upon the students return. Still waiting for course materials regarding a course I applied for online on the 11th August as an appointment was abruptly cancelled by Sophie that was made 4pm on the Monday and then cancelled at 7am the following morning. I have called numerous times to be fobbed off by everyone Keeleigh & unnamed staff member with whom I have spoken. I was told I should hear back by the 4th September by Caroline Hud or Alison Kitchener but still nothing! I'll not be using this college in future and have chosen to follow the course with an alternate provider. Why accept a person's application via email on the 13th August and then fail to provide the course? This is a government funded distance learning course so would it be a fair assumption that students are being accepted onto these courses just for the college to pocket the funds with no intent to provide the course to students? I do hope they haven't financially benefited from my application!
Used to be good. Until the merge. Dawn has no idea how to run a college and Andrew is a massive french shower.
Should have gone to Burton or Derby. They give you good work experience placements instead of expecting you to find one yourself. Staff here are poor and rude with few exceptions. Last year had a new tutor every week that told us all conflicting things about how assignments were supposed to be done. Was told that the "things we haven't studied yet" would be on the exam and we were expected to revise them anyway without knowing what they were. Also we were told there was supposed to be lots of practical work but there was 0%, even in the second year after we had complained about it and they promised it would change. The unidays discount was the best part of my experience here.
After reading Ryan's review, I felt compelled to write a review on this college. Mainly, I hate to say it, because I felt the same/had similar experiences. However, not everything was all gloom and doom! Whilst I completed the course, made friends and had one amazing teacher, I must say that having to put up with a new teaching department ourselves to begin with was not at all easy! We also found that in our department, one of our teachers simply didn't cut the mustard English dept. - say no more and having to have a new Maths teacher a month or two before our lessons ended didn't really help either. Stephenson College is a beautifully built college, with great canteens and rooms to learn in. HOWEVER, before you start your course, please make sure you are aware of the teaching experience your teachers have - especially if it is a rather academic course. Also try to make sure that they're not just going to up and leave before the course starts/halfway through the course. Teachers should have passion and love for the subjects they are teaching, and any good teacher will know that.
As a student that recently left this collage , my experience here was not a pleasant one , the tutors was no help when needed and they was very one sided in certain situations which i experienced. I felt like i was being singled out and not listened to. They also made me promsies and put plans into place to help me enjoy my time at collage which later they did not follow through with. The tutor of my course had there views and opinons on the students and they chose who they wanted to listen to and not . The bullying policy at this collage is not strong enough as they let people off with a warning that have done serious things . Which then resulted in 3 people leaving the course i was on. I didnt want to stay on this course due to all these events and also being told by my tutor that i wasnt going to succeed in my chosen career as i didnt have the best exam results , but isn't that why i went back to collage ? I dont think the tutors stick to what they say . This was my experience here and i wouldn't suggest anyone to attend - sophie
Tracy Turberfield has been a marvellous tutor for distance learning. Many of my school staff completed courses both before Covid-19 and also while on lockdown. This ensured that staff received high quality CPD even during such a difficult time. I would highly recommend Stephenson College and Tracy as a tutor, especially if you are looking into undertaking distance learning courses.
If I could rate this college 0 stars, I would. Stay away from this college if you value your education. When I began my course in the first year everything was normal and I was getting to know my tutors and fellow classmates... Two weeks later ALL 3 of my tutors left and we were stuck with agency teachers that could barely grasp basic English never mind the learning criteria for the course. I was asked on one occasion 'what we had to do' by one agency support tutor, how utterly ridiculous. Considering the lack of knowledge from the agency staff, on several occasions I have completed work that wasn't relevant to the criteria that I had to fulfil to pass the course. Moving on... the deputy manager in-charge of my course was about as much use as an ashtray on a motorbike. He would often dismiss any complaints or concerns that worried students had directed at him with sarcastic comments such as 'is that my fault?'. One student in particular asked him for advice on how to carry out one assignment as the teaching for the assignment was not delivered properly at all and less able students were struggling to complete it. This "deputy manager" then replied to the student with his usual rubbish, 'is that my fault?' and eventually told the student that they should learn the criteria for the assignment themselves without any proper tutoring at all. What exactly is the point of attending a college that won't teach you how to complete the assignment? What an absolute disgrace. Eventually that "deputy manager" disappeared and was never seen again at the college. Furthermore, due to the high staff turnover we were taught by several tutors that all contradicted each others marking, meaning that one tutor would tell you that you had completed the assignment and the marking tutor would then refer it back to you and say that it is incomplete. This is unfair and negligent, something seriously needs to be done to improve the standards of the college. Apparently the college has some policy about the amount of time tutors are allowed to mark and return the work to the student passed or referred which I overheard was within a time period of 2 weeks. One piece of work that I submitted took 2 MONTHS to be marked and REFERRED back to me meaning that I had little time to spend on the units that I was working on at the time. I found it impossible to achieve more than a 'pass' on the first year course due to the time wasted throughout the year through no fault of my own. Quite frankly it is abhorrent. Finally, after attending the first day of the second year on the course I had no choice but to leave the college as the board for the course decided that it would be a good idea to implement more intense conditions that had to be fulfilled in-order to achieve the qualification which included removed of the referral system. The college also stopped the supply of bus passes to students that didn't leave locally I live 8+ miles away meaning that it was no longer financially viable or worth my time. The final nail in the coffin was the PSL I'm sure that's a fancy term for 'waste of time' which beforehand me and my classmates had to wait half an hour for the college staff to realise that we were waiting to be shown which room we had to enter for PSL. On entering the room we were greeted by some woman who had heard of our misery we had to endure in year 1 and attempted to 'apologise on behalf of the college' which meant that all of our year 1 issues were resolved I'm being sarcastic. The PSL lesson consisted of trying to kick a football on top of a piece of paper yes, you did read that correctly as an exercise to 'break the ice' with the other classmates in the lesson. Something needs to be done urgently yes, I'm talking to you Ofsted. Regards, A former student.
