Took my young daughter and we had an excellent day out. The staff were incredibly helpful and super friendly too. We done the additional activity of semaphore, codes etc. Great little cafe too. All facilities were clean, especially the toilets. Take some change there are some old style amusement arcade machines in the STEAM. Would highly recommend a visit, learnt loads going there with my daughter and a fun day out. Plus a great little gift shop in the reception area.
One of the best Railway Museums Iv been to. What sets it apart is how family-friendly it is. Loads of opportunities for children to actually experience what it was like to operate trains during this time. The exhibition and displays are also fascinating and the informative videos they have are really good. They are also very COVID-friendly and the toilets are super clean.
Interactive and informative Steam museum. Learn all about the history of the Swindon Rail Works in a beautiful building. Parked in Swindon Outlet North, only cost £1 but you can bring the receipt from the rail museum to the info desk and they will give you a free parking pass! Only a 5 minute walk. There was a lot to see and do and if you love trains as much as my partner there are some great Steam trains housed here for you to see. Lots for the kids too, little puzzles and games throughout. Very enjoyable afternoon.
Whilst shopping at the Swindon Outlets I was in awe at the size of the Great Western Railways workshops, I convinced my wife that we should visit the STEAM museum whilst we were there, and I was not disappointed. The museum was a fantastic encapsulation of what the site used to be and the great innovations that came from it. An absolutely fascinating place to visit and a definite worthwhile visit if you are in the area.
Excellent museum covering the first days of the Great Western Railway through to current times. It of course features the history of the Swindon Railway Works - which was one of the World's greatest centres of railway locomotive production. With many photos, information boards, artifacts, videos and historic locomotives. Superbly presented. A must see for anyone interested in the story of our railways. There's also a parking refund for museum visitors. And if you prefer to travel by train, it's only a short walk from the station.
Very interesting museum. I thought it was a bit pricey as it's not a large museum, however I suppose the upkeep is quite high. However we did enjoy the walk around and as I am old enough to remember the steam engines and some of the place names they had up, it was a bit nostalgic.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Nicely set up and detailed museum. Plenty of interactive exhibits for kids, even if they're almost 30 like me. Every item on display was polished to perfection and laid out in a way that you could view it from a suitable angle. The only downsides for me were not being able to take photos in some areas due to school children being present fully understandable but still unfortunate and a lack of King George V locomotive merchandise/memorabilia in the shop. Still well worth a visit if you're in the area.
Loved it. It's THE best museum I've been to, not just for railways. To see these huge locos and wagons up close and personal is just awe inspiring. Staff were super friendly. Everything was clean and well looked after. There was a school tour group in while we walked around and it was great to see how interactive their learning was. Dressing up in hats to see who was poor or rich. Social class etc. The kids had fun too. My husband and myself enjoyed changing the line signals and stepping into the royal carriage or buffet carriage. There's a lot to see and listen to. I never knew how small Brunel was! A great day out. We will definitely be back again.
Great day out at the museum a lovely look back at our history and the history of swindon. they had a Lego museum on today a great day out for all the family. I would highly recommend seeing both.Visited onWeekendWait timeUp to 10 minReservation recommendedYes
We went there in occasion of a Lego event and the museum positively surprised us. Reading about the story of GWR was very interesting as well as seeing the locomotives and the rebuilt work environments. Nice trip.
