This is a quite disgraceful introduction to Welshpool for any visitor leaving the train here. For locals and anyone using it to commute or to begin a longer journey to visit friends or family or go on holiday it is just woebegone and makes you glad that you are leaving. The original station was quite grand and in keeping with a busy border town. During the era of privatisation that building became a retail premises. The old-fashioned long railway platform that could accommodate maybe eight coaches remains, presumably because it was too expensive or impractical for the rail authorities to have it dug up and sold. There is a mean little plastic shelter at one end that can maybe enable up to twenty people tightly packed to avoid rain. You might take cover for a while in the retail premises but do not overdo it because it is a 3 or 4 minute walk over to the platform. The car parks are inadequate for the demand especially at weekends and during the summer. A thoroughly depressing location at which to wait for a train.
Great location for a lot of Welsh history! Stunning listed building of a Victorian railway station repurposed as a small out of town shopping venue. All tastes catered for with a cracking Cafe if you're hungry. Highly recommend
Delivers the bare minimum you would expect from a train station. One platform for trains towards Shrewsbury and Birmingham, the other for services to Machynlleth and Aberystwyth. There is a small shelter for bad weather, but the rest of the platform is very exposed to wind chill. There is a single ticket machine, that only takes card. The station is entirely unmanned, but there is a departure board for each platform. There are prerecorded announcements that are more comedic than helpful as the computer voice can't cope with Welsh place names.
Lovely old station now retail centre replaced by windswept platform with only a ticket machine and tiny shelter. No toilets/cafe on platforms. Poor information.
This is an unmanned station, with only a ticket machine, which only accepts cards. There is also only a tiny metal bus shelter for shelter in colder months or rain. The information signs are also often broken or with missing displays.
Customer service doesn't usually include an eye roll and a rude sour faced woman behind the till making comments as your group walks in .... but if that's your thing you'll love the place.
Individual friendly shops and very clean always and award winning butchers "Rick Lloyd" and Alexander of Welshpool.
The ticket machine only accepts cards and it hasn’t worked half of the time I’ve been to this station
Ticket machine doesn't work most of the time.
