This substantial and unique building sits at the eastern edge of the Merchant City Character Area of the Glasgow Central Conservation Area. The building was designed by A. W. Wheatley and constructed in 1896-98. It was designed to house Glasgow City Cleansing Department's horses, carts, harnesses and fodder. With its large horse scale ramps to stables on the first, second and third floors, it was in effect a multistorey carpark for horses! Whilst the horses were last in the building around 35 years ago, the building continued to serve the city cleansing department. Following a period of abondonment, in 2019 many of the original features were retained in the clever conversion to affordable housing, where people rather than horses can now enjoy the sheltered courtyard.
Stables are in a semi dilapidated state but this is what makes them so photogenic.
