Stumble upon this church in South Kensington, didn't know what it was until I read the review on this page now. But the architecture and the style and the color is a different contrac to the neighborhood it's in. Sadly they were closed when I passed through here but I'll definitely come back.
A beautiful Armenian Church at the very heart of London. Easy access for the outsider of London too.
Can you tell me if the church is open and can be visited on a weekday and with what opening hours, Thanks in advance. I would like to visit her in about 10 days
St Sarkis is a beautiful Armenian Apostolic church in Iverna Court in Kensington. Built in 1923. Architects were Mewes, and Arthur Davis. The exterior is a copy of the 13th Century bell tower of the monastery at Haghpat in Armenia. The building of this church was funded by the great Armenian philanthropist Calouste Gulbenkian. His ashes are buried in the grounds of this church. Gulbenkian studied at Kings College, University of London, and was in the oil business. Above the entrance to the church is a dedication to his mother and father. Several planters with herbs and vegetables are in the church gardens, along with some nice benches.
100 year old Armenian church. Very nice and calm place in London. You can pass by and participate in Sunday mass
The Haghpat monastery complex in Armenia, on which this building is based, is quite one of the most serene and peacful places I have ever been to. This church mirrors that. I prefer the classical simplicity of the interior. The acoustics are brilliant no microphones needed and the Sumday service is a good introduction to the Armenian rite for those not familiar with it.
wish i cpuld go inside but looks amazing sad I couldn't go inside. I'm an Armenian myself and wanted to see this church before I left.
The best example of Armenian architecture in the UK. A beautiful church built by Gulbenkian in 1921.
Worth visiting on Sunday morning even if you are not part of the community.
Very impressive place.
