The oldest building in Ayr and an important part of Scottish history. The Scottish Parliament met here with Robert the Bruce. John Knox preached here, and Mary Queen of Scots passed this way. The tower is all that remains of a large church dedicated to John the Baptist. The church was taken by Cromwell's soldiers as part of the defence citadel and used as a store and a lookout tower.
Whilst reading the plaque explaining about the meeting between William Wallace and The Bruce here this cat thought it would join in the fun!
Not often open so I really enjoyed Doors Open day. Great views.

Hidden gem of history in the middle of Ayr. Tower from 15th century added to original 13th century church and church later demolished in the 1700's. Rarely sadlyopen to the public but has four floors and and views of Ayr and the Firth of Clyde from the top parapet.
This edifice is called a "Tower" but perhaps a more befitting description may be "steeple" to distinguish it from a "keep" or other fortification It is the sole remaining structure of the ancient ruined St John the Baptist church, and is set in a well-kept area of park/garden The Tower is accessible to the public with information boards displaying diverse facts about the history of the structure
