Very cool craft brewery bar, only discovered by chance. Well worth the trip down that alley. Loads of beer options, I had the brown ale centennial £5.50 for a pint. Delicious. Good access though the front door isn’t automated. They have disability based toilets available. There is a beer garden at the back and seem to pushing the food element, I didn’t eat but it looked good.
Today I just had a great experience at St Johns of Hackney. I live in the area and wanted to have a roast, so I went there by myself. After realising that most of the tables in the front were taken, I headed to the back and was happy to notice that there are plenty of seats in the back, close to the kitchen - and this was very rewarding as I describe below. Julio, one of the chefs, quickly told me to take a seat at the 'Kitchen Bar' and I would not regret it. In fact I did not, quite the opposite. He asked me what roast I'd like so he can start preparing it even before I made a payment at the bar. A nice gesture already made me more comfortable. While I was waiting for my food I was surprised by the Chefs Julio & Elliot with some croquettes. They told me that's one of the perks of sitting there. They were delicious!! Very soon afterwards the Pork Belly Roast was ready and boy that looked good. To my surprise, once again, the chefs gave me a taster of the Chicken roast, which was the best chicken roast I've had in London so far. Right now I still can't decide which one I liked best, pork or chicken, I'll leave this decision to you. The roast was roasted in real coal fire, which added so much flavour to the meat. But nothing is so perfect, as the gravy was a tiny bit saltier than I'd prefer. Still, this hasn't changed the great performance of the roast since the gravy is a side by default. The potatoes and yorkshire puddings were cooked to perfection and I have nothing else to add regarding those. The vegetables were very tasty and fresh, although cooked they were crunchy al dente. In addition to all of that, there were still a couple of very friendly dogs that are apparently from the owner/manager or similar and are there often. And as I love dogs, this was also another thing to add to my experience. In conclusion, do visit St Johns of Hacney for a roast and some very good customer service, which truly made me feel good as a client and I'll definitely be coming back. So should you.
Great tap bar. Hidden worth a visit.
