A beautiful church founded in 812 by daughter of Alfred the Great, a very nice example of a beautiful church in ShrewsburyVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Over 1,100 years old the church was founded by Alfred the Great's daughter Aethelfieda, Lady of the Mercians. Lovely church in the middle of the medieval town of Shrewsbury. Plenty of history displayed and explained around the church including a free audio guide downloadable onto your phone. Worth a visit if you're in Shrewsbury. @MyBucketListAt60
There has been a Church here on this site since Saxon times . The original sadly now gone thought to have been founded by Aethelflaed the renowned daughter of Alfred the Great and Lady of the Mercians . How cool founders don't come much better than that ! The Church has been rebuilt several times the oldest part today being the 184 foot 15th century spire . Which can be seen from all around . The nave and chancel were designed by John Carline and built by 1795 . Be prepared when you walk in or the beauty of the East Window by Francis Eginton of Handsworth will knock you off your feet . It is stunning . A portrayal of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary with a theme of Hope . God knows we need some of that today . At a cost of £200 it is copied from a painting by Guido Reni now in Munich . It really is a glorious sight . St Alkmund himself originally was buried in Shropshire before being moved at a later date to Derby . His sarcophagus can be seen at Derby Museum today .
Simply a beautiful church with a great history. A superb place to contemplate and/or worship. And if you are into architecture, well that really is the cherry on top.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Very nice simple church - with a stunning depiction of the assumption in the east window behind the altar. The parish was established an astounding 1111 years ago jun23Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Lovely church especially stain glass window ,modern but full of light.church and bear steps
A warm welcome and uplifting Sunday sermon against what I felt was quite an austere background. The church lies at the heart of ancient Shrewsbury.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo wait
Quiet, historic church. Worth a quick stop to visit the interior.
A big impressive church with some lovely stained glass windows and lovely timbers. There wasn't a service or anything on when I visited so not a full review.
