Nestled in the bustling core of Southampton, the Southampton City Art Gallery is a delightful discovery for art enthusiasts and casual visitors alike. Established in 1939, this gallery has evolved into a cultural cornerstone, showcasing a diverse range of artworks that reflect both the city’s rich history and its contemporary vibrancy. Exhibition and Collection One of the gallery’s standout features is its impressive permanent collection, which spans over 800 years of art history. The collection is notable for its strength in British art from the 19th and 20th centuries, including works by renowned artists such as Sir Stanley Spencer and Eric Ravilious. This historical breadth is complemented by a solid representation of contemporary pieces, offering visitors a well-rounded artistic experience. In addition to its permanent collection, the gallery frequently hosts temporary exhibitions, which are thoughtfully curated to include both emerging and established artists. These exhibitions often focus on a variety of themes and media, providing a fresh and dynamic experience with each visit. Facilities and Accessibility The gallery is housed in an elegant, early 20th-century building that blends classical architecture with modern amenities. The layout is user-friendly, making it easy to navigate through its various sections. Accessibility is a priority, with ramps and elevators ensuring that the gallery is welcoming to all visitors.
I dont think there's a better collection of fine art on the South Coast and its completely free to visit. They have Rodin, Gormley, Van Dyke, Lowry, Reynolds, Gainsborough ... the list goes on and on. It's a brilliant place. Exhibitions change regularly. Lots of talks, clubs and workshops if you want to get involved.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Several important bequests over the years have added wonderful works to the gallery collection. On either side of the main gallery which you reach by the central stairs are multi-room galleries focusing on various eras. Many major and well-known artists are included. Some sculptures are also on display, including by Rodin.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

A very nice gallery in a very special place. Located on the first floor practically above the ground floor library at the Southampton Civic Center. There is a lift so it is wheelchair accessible. And male and female toilets on the ground floor. They also have a small Arts,Craft and Books shop on the first floor with items made by local Art Students and sold at very reasonable prices. The gallery opened in 1939 with much of the initial funding coming from two bequests. One from Robert Chipper field the other from Frederick William Smith. Southampton City Art Gallery houses some of the finest works of art in the south of England. With over 5,300 items from the Renaissance to the present day. Work includes some of the greats such as J.M.W. Turner, Auguste Rodin, L.S.Lowry, among many others. There is also free entry
Medium sized gallery in the heart of Southampton City with permanent and temporary exhibitions. Old favourites and interesting new installations. One Saturday morning per month there's a pianist, so beautiful music reverberates around the space. Child-friendly - I love to bring my grandchildren here. Donations are welcome but there's no entrance charge. Why am I telling you all this?! I'd like to keep it for myself!!
Free art gallery for all ages to enjoy. The best part is that it's situated within the library so you can enjoy a quiet read and then appreciate the art.Wait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
It really depends what kind of exhibition is on, but generally, I would recommend this gallery for a good 1-2 hours walk. Their permanent exhibitions are quite good too, yet it would be great to have a bit more curation from room to room. I'm surprised by the renaissance work they have and also a room about a greek myth. The explanations are written to be easily understood, I like that a lot too.
Wonderful gallery! Favourite place to find inspiration. The artwork covers many genres and periods of time. There are contemporary pieces of art here, too. The space has different areas, divided into a series of rooms, some are low lit and moody others are bright and airy with super high ceilings. There are plenty of beautifully crafted benches that invite the viewer to contemplate, or just rest in front of a piece of art. Photography is allowed, and there is also a small amount of relevant books, pamphlets, and postcards available to purchase. If you require refreshments I can recommend The SeaCity Museum Cafe, which is in close proximity and well worth a visit.
