We popped in unexpectedly and were delighted with our quirky but enjoyable discovery. Helped by the fact that my colleague and I are dog lovers the three resident Jugs were friendly but not intrusive we were greeted but a welcoming landlord, had a superb homemade curry and handmade chips, great conversation and top value. If we were local it'd definitely become a regular spot to try the latest ales and have a catch up.
Good selection of beers. Very friendly owner. Have eaten here many times, often as a party of around 6 to 8 people, which the owner would accommodate through cooking a whole leg of lamb or a pork belly for us with a load of roasties. Lovely food, lovely atmosphere.
Right up my street. Warm welcome. Good selection of real ales. Wife loved a fruity G&T. Friendly host and locals. And, if I might say, just enough quirkiness. Lovely.
My wife and I went there on the recommendation of two ladies we met in The Tivolli pub just around the corner. We walked in to an empty bar all bar a large bearded gentleman sitting at the bar. The bar area was full of dog toys and two small dogs. We said hello to barman and as my wife looked at the ales of which there was a very good selection I asked the bartender which ciders he had on offer. He told me but I had heard of neither of them so I asked if I could have just a taste of the dryer of the two. At this point the large gentleman stood up and turned to me and said and I quote “ We don’t do tasters you either buy a half or a pint or you can leave ‘ He then went over and opened the door. I fully understand why the place was empty at 9.30pm on a Friday night.
Great pub fantastic beers, in winter always a real fire burning. Love the new toilets! Food is really good pub food, and sometimes the landlord brings out a plate as a taster.
Truly awful. Obnoxious landlord with hideous dogs. Tiny pub with oppressive atmosphere. There are many more pubs around - go to one of them instead.
VERY RUDE LANDLORD Was looking forward to going here as the write up in the good beer guide recommended it. My colleague and I arrived quite late admittedly at about 22:50. On entering the guy behind the bar rudely shouted "we're shut". No "sorry folks you're too late, we're shut". I protested since there were plenty of people still there and we'd walked 20 minutes to get there. The bloke then muttered something about us expecting him to provide a taxi and then we were practically manhandled out. There are a number of great real ale pubs in Cheltenham; those who pride themselves on great customer service as well as great beer. This isn't one of them.
Micro Pub with cosey atmosphere. Everything a Pub should be about. Good beer, exceptional landlord, lovely chips ... Heart melting dogs.
lovely barmaid absolutely destroyed by disgusting landlord. It was obvious that she was on her own and working in a very professional manner whilst the pub was very busy. The landlord decided to leave his drunken perch and lay in to her every move instead of helping. The poor girl left in tears.
We pre-ordered our dinner and they had it ready on time. It was really tasty, not expensive and the staff was really nice to us. My only complaint is the ventilation of the local, which was non existent so it was quite hot due to the low ceiling. I would come back, though.
