Royal Sussex County Hospital

Story

The Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children is a children's hospital located within the grounds of the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton in the English county of East Sussex. It provides outpatient services, inpatient facilities, intensive care and a 24-hour emergency care service for children referred by GPs and other specialists. The Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children originally stood on Dyke Road in the Montpelier area of Brighton. Local architect Thomas Lainson's red-brick and terracotta building, in the Queen Anne style, was opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1881. It remained in use for more than a century before being replaced by a new building at the main Royal Sussex County Hospital site. The new facility opened in June 2007, and has won architectural awards for its innovative design. The future of the Dyke Road site has been uncertain since the move to the new premises was first considered in 2001; Lainson's buildings and their later additions were threatened with demolition until 2009, when a developer was refused planning permission to replace the hospital with flats. Brighton & Hove City Council's latest planning briefs state that any redevelopment of the site should incorporate Lainson's original building.

My husband was unfortunate to have a stroke on New Years Day. He was rushed to Sussex county hospital and I must say the care he received was fantastic. From the cleaners to the chefs the nurses the occupational therapists the doctors everybody was absolutely fantastic and gave him the best care imaginable. The new hospital wing wards B10 and C10 are a credit to the NHS. I would like to say a big thank you to you all
I was treated as a priority patient having hit my head in a fall. A&E was very busy. It looked like chaos to my visitors. But in reality there were just a lot of people there being treated. Some of the patients were loud, angry, moaning, shouting and not helping anyone. But the staff were helping everyone equally and were brilliant under huge pressure. I was proud of them and so were most being helped. Don't knock the NHS. We all need it.
I recently had the pleasure of interacting with Helen from the booking team at the University Sussex Hospital, and I cannot speak highly enough of her professionalism and dedication. Helen truly went above and beyond in assisting me with my booking inquiry. Not only did she handle my request with the utmost respect and care, but she also took the initiative to reach out to the neurology department on my behalf to ensure that my booking was confirmed.nnHer commitment to providing excellent service was evident throughout the entire process. Helen was not only efficient but also incredibly courteous, making what could have been a stressful situation smooth and manageable. Her communication was clear, timely, and considerate, and she made sure that all of my concerns were addressed.nnIt’s rare to find such a level of professionalism and genuine care, and I’m grateful to Helen for making this experience so positive. I highly recommend her and the entire booking team at the University Sussex Hospital for their outstanding service. Thank you, Helen, for your exceptional support!
I was referred to the hospital for a chest X-ray. I'd been dreading and postponing it. Eventually I went and was amazed:nnGreat new light building I remember it as dark and dingy, friendly staff pointing me in the right direction, in and out within 15 minutes, friendly and efficient radiologists, results back within the hour! All good!nnThe NHS at its best! Thank you!
The outcome of my vascular surgery was satisfactory, thanks, but the experience of 8 days in a busy ward was horrendous. The conditions were TOTALLY unhygienic, the cleaners were thorough but you don’t see them often enough, our ward lavatory was filthy and reporting it made no difference. My dressings were not adequate according to what I was later told. Avoid it if you can.
