Rothesay Castle
"Last entry is at 5pm. Cross the drawbridge over the moat and climb the 'bloody stair' to the circular ramparts, or descend into a forbidding pit prison. This powerful stronghold, built in the 1200s, was twice besieged and captured by the Norse, who battered down the eastern wall with their axes. a Short film tells this remarkable story. The castle has also been a royal base. Robert III died here and James IV used it to launch campaigns against the Lords of the Isles."

The castle is great but the only problem is the seagulls have nested and took over the castle it's great to go back in time and relive history but there is a constant sound of seagulls screaming and nesting in parts of the castle so you can't access it.
Lovely castle with a reasonable admission fee. Lots to explore including climbing both down into the dungeon, and up to the ramparts. We had the added bonus of spying lots of tiny seagull chicks!
Sadly castle still remains closed would be good for rothsay tourism to reopen it as I saw 70% of shops closed down today and alot of them that weren't closed down completely had notices they are only open 1 day a week or still to reopenVisited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
A small castle in isle of bute area.. Doesn't take more than half hour to explore.. It has one or two spots to see view from top..good place to visit in summer to enjoy greenery in surroundings
Really loved exploring this castle. Dog friendly with lots of rooms and stairs. Outside space is really nice. Highly recommend this castle.
We didn't get in as the castle is closed for renovations for a few weeks, but it's great from the outside! A proper castle with a moat and bang in he city centre. Make sure to stop by even if you don't have much time - well worth it!
Castles are always worth a visit and Rothesay castle is no exception. Steeped in history, make sure you catch the video presentation narrated by Magnus Magnusson ,and presented by Dougie Vipond, all about the castle and Bute's past and the constant battle for land and castle over the centuries. A magnificent ruin , if you visit Rothesay it's a must
Great historical site, cheap to enter and there's a video explaining the history. Most of the castle is open ruins but some of it was restored in the 16th century and is a large dining hall. There's a pit prison you can climb down into and a small shop with a selection of books, clothing and toys. Well worth a visit
Small, has family tickets, there is gift-items shop just outside the main entrance. There is a lack outside.
