We spent a couple of days in the area so had occasion to visit the ‘farm shop’ a few times over 3 days. My overall take away is that this business, while it does some things well, has a bit of an identity crisis - it’s trying to be too many things. What works - the cafe for an English breakfast coffee/ tea or sweets served in doors - the only thing and place you can eat inside or in a comfortable setting. The farm shop, which isn’t really a ‘farm shop’ but more of a gourmet food shop with a small selection of veg/ fruit, dairy and a much larger selection of gourmet foods, wines, etc. There is a frozen food section and quite a nice cheese and butchery shop. On the cafe side there is a small but nice selection of woolen items, Rhug Estate beauty products and some children’s and art items. Outdoors there are a few season plants, pots and seeds on display, all well priced. The ice cream is delicious and there was a great deal of activity at the electric charging stations although we didn’t use them. What doesn’t work, IMO, take out food with noisy beepers going off everywhere to let you know your food is ready, not noting the burgers have sauce on them and then paying extra for ketchup and mayo - which is the American version of miracle whip and the English version of salad cream. I didn’t personally care for the lamb burger I had but my husband is English and had no complaints. All outdoor seating is at picnic tables or some type of rain shelter. The map for the farm walk isn’t posted near the start of the walk, rather on a sign which we didn’t see until our 2nd or third visit. The addition of American bison is a vanity project that looks oddly out of place in the Welsh country side and seems a slight to the native live stock. The drive through and second ‘take away’ location make the estate seem like it’s trying too hard. With all of the various areas there are not nearly enough restroom facilities to accommodate the steady stream of people. One criticism I read in other reviews had to do with the estate facilities being 100% cashless. We did a bit of research and spoke to one employee who confirmed that their move to being cashless was driven by the closure of local banks that could service their business. All that said, we’ll certainly pop in for a nice bottle of wine or bread and cheese or a good cup of coffee and English breakfast.
Stumbled across Rhug Estate on our way to our air bnb and decided to stop for lunch! I had a jacket potato with beans which was gluten and dairy free! It was delicious - super filling! My friend had Welsh Rarebit which she really enjoyed. The service was great, the man offered for us to try the biscuits from the coffees but they weren’t gluten free so he gave me some gluten free chocolates instead! Would definitely visit again if in the area
What a lovely place! We stopped off for some lunch here on our way back from wales. Lovely, friendly staff who gave us great service. Dog friendly too so you can sit inside with your furry friends - although there is an outdoor area too if you’d prefer Food was delicious, I had fishcakes and chips and my boyfriend had the jacket potato which came in a hot dish and looked lovely. And they have a lovely cakes and pastry area for those with a sweet tooth like me!! We also had a visit to the farm shop which was lovely and had so many meats, cheeses, chocolates and more to choose from
Ecological and environmentally this place aims to achieve a high standard. The InstaVolt chargers are a boon as they are quick and easy to operate. The cafe is pleasant but menu is limited. The Bison cafe seems outdoor only and April is rather chilly. Parking: EV charging
Nice place to stop on your way to the coast. Good coffee, locally sourced food. It's not cheap but when you look at the prices in services and petrol stations for the junk they sell not bad. Lovely setting and cute little park for kids. Cheered up my very grumpy toddler no end.
We stopped in for breakfast on our last day of holiday. The estate is well presented clean and has lots to offer. The food was delicious -it was really busy so we had a bit of a wait but we were well taken care of and to be honest it was nice to have time to sit and have a drink and relax before eating. Overall a really positive experience and we would definitely come again if passing.
Came upon this place on a camping trip and stopped for a bite to eat and to stretch our legs. A lovely clean and tidy farm shop and cafe with loads of hand made items and food The prices were reasonable. I had probably the most delicious Welsh rarebit I've ever eaten! The staff were very polite. Definitely worth stopping by of you are in the area. Parking: Good amount of parking Kid-friendliness: Kids play area
Its a lovely place with lots of choice and beautifully set out. I went in to buy some fresh handmade cakes. They did sell what was called handmade but it seems your average home baker now has access to e numbers, flavours and colourings. What i was hoping for was the old fashioned kind made with flour, milk eggs, raisin etc. Would be nice to see this in the future . I noticed other people reading ingredients and putting items back as i was. A lot of farm shops are doing this nowdays. Pretty packaging of heavily processed foods which look really good but lack that homemade appeal. Oh yes and its 'cashless'. Not a move a farm estate should be agreeing to.
Fabulous farm shop with lots of interesting produce and goods, albeit on the upper end of the price spectrum. Nice to buy a few little bits as treats and presents. Staff in the cafe were lovely, coffees tasty and they let us buy a delicious carrot cake from the shop and have it with our drinks. Also lovely to be surrounded by sparrows in the outside seating area, good vibes all around.
First Hotdog I've ever had with half of sausage yep cut down the middle on cheap bread cheap cheese all for the sum of £9.50 and £3 for a handful of chips absolute rip off never again. Also cashless which is unacceptable and shouldn't be allowed.Food: 1/5
