Raoul's Cafe
"Two brothers journeyed from Alsace, France, to Soho, New York. They found a little restaurant for sale. The booths were already in place and they kept the chairs until they fell apart or were destroyed in the brawls that marked the early years. They were so poor they threw nothing out, not even the salt. Guy turned his Alsatian cooking skills to fine steaks and fish for low prices.Serge stood outside on Prince Street, a lonely figure importuning passersby to enter and taste. People began to trickle in from their illegal lofts in the neighborhood. Some came back the next night or the next week, and people spread the word. More came, and came back. Soon the locals were complaining about the good reviews. The rest is New York bistro history."

Raoul’s is a must for burger lovers! Get a reservation for brunch and order the burger. You will not be disappointed. The patty is perfectly cooked, crispy on the outside and juicy in the middle with bits of peppercorn in every bite. It’s served with fresh, dressed greens between two toasted buns with pepper gravy on the side to dip the burger in. I’ve never had anything like it — it’s unique and delicious. The burger comes with a good sized helping of fries. Service and ambience are also superb. Highly recommend!
I feel like Raoul’s has stepped up its game since the last time I visited. The steak frites was delicious and well priced for New York. I also really enjoyed the monkfish bouillabaisse and goats cheese salad. Service was also excellent sitting at the bar and the hostess was very accommodating for our walk in.Food: 5/5
My reviews are based on my total experience and while I was really looking forward to eating at this iconic local gem I was very disappointed in the service. We had an early reservation and were seated on time and the restaurant filled quickly. It was crowded and loud, both good things. The amount of time we waited to have our drink order taken was a little too long but eventually got drinks and they were great. Food was delicious, as expected. Tartare was great, the salad with it was tangy and perfect to cut the richness of the beef. Artichoke was very tender with a tangy dipping sauce. Im not used to it being served chilled and think I prefer hot but it was definitely worth ordering. The dover sole was by far the best bite and worth the price. It was cooked perfectly, tender, flaky and delicious. The hazelnuts added a hint of flavor and the perfect texture to keep the entree from being one note and the sauce would be amazing by itself. . Highly recommend trying it. The duck entree was also good but unfortunately undercooked based on our request. Here is where the service issue comes in. We would have liked to order wine for our meal but never had the opportunity. Our server did not come back to the table after he asked how we liked our appetizers. In addition he never stopped by to ask how our entrees were until the meal was over and his question was specific to the sole because I was debating on whether to order it. When our plates were cleared no one asked why half of the duck entree was not eaten. These may seem like petty things but I feel they are a large part of the total experience. The profiteroles were absolutely delicious and pouring the hot chocolate sauce at the table is a great touch. The coffee we ordered when we ordered dessert was not served until we had finished eating dessert. I can’t finish without mentioning the bread. Sounds silly but it is a must order if you like good bread. Crusty, flaky and tender, absolutely one of the best breads I have eaten at a restaurant. The only thing that would have added to it was if some flaky sea salt was served with it to sprinkle on top. . Overall the food was absolutely delicious but unfortunately I got the feeling that if you are a regular you are treated well but if not they are just working on turning tables. I will however come back again to sit at the bar and try the burger.
This has been on my list for quite a while and I’m pleased to have had an overall nice experience there. Came here for brunch. I had a reservation but they weren’t able to seat us until about 15 minutes later. Service was very quick, and our server was very delightful and nice. I got the chicken schnitzel, which was quite good, though the chicken was a biiiit on the dry side. It was still delicious though!
Best steak in New York City. There’s no competition! The atmosphere is authentic. It’s truly a time capsule. It feels like you’re stepping into a trendy restaurant in 1975. It doesn’t get more real. It’s been my go-to place for 2 decades.Food: 5/5
Exceptional! The atmosphere is great, our waiters were very friendly and attentive. Food is delicious and because it was our anniversary they surprised us with an amazing cake covered with lantern like caramel shell. Absolutely amazing thank youFood: 5/5
Waited for the legendary burger. Was amazing, and the staff were amazing. Definitely want to go back. The dessert was also incredible.Food: 5/5
Excellent dinner! The dinner was divine. Everything we ordered was super fresh and tasted so good. The famous steak a poivre truly is unparalleled here, and the steak tartar was so fresh. The truffle risotto with the chicken is a must try. The dessert was also really good. The atmosphere is super funky with old school music, a black tiled ceiling and provocative art hanging everywhere. The service was superb.
As many times as I have eaten here I have a never written a review. It’s not because I don’t love this place, on the contrary, Raoul’s is as local as it gets and I love it. From Angus, the Scottish bartender to the hostess, service is tight and yet personal. I am a born and raised NYer who now lives in LA and wanted a real NY experience on my recent work trip… and I got it at Raouls. I ordered the goat cheese salad, which I rarely order and, while it was bigger than I expected, I ate it all. The vinaigrette dressing with shallots was delicious and the lettuce was so fresh I didn’t want to leave a bite. I also ordered their most popular dish, the steak au poivre. Again, amazing! I have to say the lighting was perfect dim but not dark. I hate a place that has bad lighting. The music is a key component of the atmosphere: Stevie Wonder, Smokey Robinson, Jackson Five, etc. Not what you would expect from a classic French Bistro that opened in the 1970s. But it works. And the energy was electric and fun.
If you don’t have a reservation the wait list is long can be even 3 hours. Besides that that place is majestic. Beautiful spot with great bartenders who add to the experience and the noise of people talking and having a good time. The food is great. Every dish was delicious. The steak frites is the best I had in the city. The roasted chicken surprised me by how good it was. The stew was amazing as well.
