As an independent specialist, we see it as our job to generate a level of vinous interest that’s not normally evident in the major national retailers...it’s our way of justifying our existence and of setting ourselves apart from the furious battles based on discounting alone. Wine is a complicated product and there are opportunities for specialist wine merchants to compete on things other than price alone, by offering their customers information, stimulation and even provocation.
