Went for a lovely day out with my teenage daughter. We first explored the big grand house which was full of interesting artwork and statues along with the servants kitchens and quarters. We then took a stroll around the beautiful grounds down to the lake which was stunning. It was full of wildlife and many geece and ducks. It was a very hot day so unfortunately we didn't see any deer as I think they were shading themselves much further away in the wooded areas. We then walked back to the lovely cafe for refreshments before leaving. This place is truly beautiful and well worth a visit. Will definitely be retuning.
So far I've been here twice and it's been incredible both times. Volunteers are nice, toilets are clean and cafe is decently large. The village is nice too. The house has a large selection of Greek statues and pots, as well as paintings and beautiful China.
We had a lovely time in Petworth Park, we played ball games, flew kites, had a picnic and soaked up the sun and beautiful scenery.nThe children particularly love running and rolling down the hill.nWe started our day with a snack and drink for the well supplied coffee shop.nHad a mooch in the lovely gift shop.nWe ended our day with a delicious ice cream.
So we spent the day at Petworth House with a walk round Petworth itself.nnThe architecture of the house is quite brutal, I cannot say it is attractive in any way, reminding me more of a workhouse than a grand house.nnIndeed where Capability Brown has swept away the formal gardens, even the main grounds now seem barren with only the lake giving some relief.nnThere are some small woodland walks on the way in it is some 700 metres from the car park to the house, which provides an escape from the otherwise Dickensian feel of the property.nnNow on the positive side if you like English and Dutch art this is the place to go, with 20 Turner and 17 Van Dykes on display. You need to go on a Monday morning to see one of the Turners as it is in one of the two private rooms that are only open for a few hours on that particular day.nnThe volunteers are very helpful and knowledgeable. We went on one of the free tours that lasted about 45 minutes and it was highly informative.nnThe servant quarters opposite the hall contain various old kitchens, and also the main facilities ie toilets, cafe bookshop etc. If you are planning on eating outside it is quite a long walk to the cafe and back.nnIt is just opposite the entrance to the cafe where you can exit into Petworth itself. The village/town ? is quite small and but is quite pretty in parts.nnThis property is a must for art lovers, one of the most exceptional collections I have seen in a property of this size outside of ItalynnIt only lost a star as the buildings and ground are quite dull, however I would still recommend this highly for a day out.
My wife and I walked in at Petworth as a stopover on our way to holiday accommodation.nThere’s lots of parking and the car park is only a few minutes walk from the house.nThe coffee shop and toilets are in the servant’s quarters, which is a separate building to the main house. There’s plenty of seating outside.nThe house is an absolute gem, it is full of paintings, including several by WM Turner, who was a friend of the family. Many of the Turner paintings were of stretches of the River Thames that I know, so that was a treat.nThere are no formal gardens that we saw; the grounds were designed by Capability Brown, so it’s more of an open parkland. We went for a very pleasant walk around one of the ponds.nThis was a really great place to visit, especially if you like art.
