Perth Royal Infirmary

Story

Perth Royal Infirmary is a district hospital in Perth. The Royal Infirmary, administered by NHS Tayside, caters for both the city and wider Perth & Kinross area, with a population around 182,000 being served by the hospital.HistoryPerth Royal infirmary has its origins in the Perth City and County Infirmary, which was completed in 1838 and opened to patients on 1 October of that year. This Grecian style building was designed by William Macdonald Mackenzie, with the original cost of the land and buildings being £6812-15-3 ½. The building of the hospital was funded by various contributions and subscriptions and the hospital continued to be supported by congregational collections, donations from individuals and by a number of legacies. The building was expanded and altered a number of times, but in 1914 the hospital moved to larger premises. The old hospital building is now the home of the A.K. Bell Library. The current Perth Royal Infirmary was built on a site on Glasgow Road between 1912 and 1914. An extension containing operating theatres and kitchens was added between 1934 and 1935. The most recent addition to the Royal Infirmary was the inclusion of the A&E department in 1993. This was to replace the Perth County and City Infirmary which had been in existence since 1838. The former site became a Red Cross hospital and later the home of Perth County Council for at least 50 years until it was converted into the main city library in 1991.The Royal Infirmary has been a University Teaching Hospital since 2006 and is now run by NHS Tayside. The archives of Perth Royal Infirmary are held by Archive Services, University of Dundee as part of the NHS Tayside Archives.

I felt well-cared for between NHS24, A&E during the night and ophthalmology the next day this week Ever-grateful to the people who work here especially the nurses doing a difficult job. More generally, we have noticed the medication a patient may be on from GPs/consultants and more specifically *why* they are on it needs to be more readily available or better understood by hospital staff admitting patients who may not be able to explain for themselves at admission time. The bike parking was used and it may be on a hill but seriously, only 5 bikes (incl mine) for a place this big?

I will admit it was difficult to find the main entrance the first time we went 😅 When we finally got there the staff were helpful and the room nice and clean.

Admitted last Monday with a broken wrist. We were on holiday at the time. The care and attention given throughout my two and a half day stay were just wonderful. Excellent staff from x-ray, plaster room to nursing staff and doctors. Thank you.

Worst experience of my life, causing life changing injury. I went in after a bad fall absailing my knee had swollen to triple it's normal size. I was sent for an x-ray by a junior doctor I NEVER saw a fully qualified consultant. After deciding that I was fine they sent me back home, no brace, crutches and only ibuprofen and paracetamol as pain relief. At this hospital they managed to miss every tell tale sign that the soft tissue in my knee had been litterally ripped apart, I had actually torn one tendon in half, ripped my cartridge open and torn another tendon. If this hospital had, on the day I went in, seen this life changing injury and put me on crutches and in a leg brace I would have been fine, had a quick surgery in a few weeks time and bounced to normal within a few months. Instead it started 3 years of pain, agony and limited mobility. When I went back home, my leg started dislocating itself frequently, when I finally saw a specialist back in Manchester he broke the news to me that half my soft tissue was missing. He put me straight in a knee brace that I had to wear for a further 2 years. I had to have major surgery to correct the issue where they cut open both of my legs, instead of just one, leaving me with 7 scars all over my knees, instead of just 3 on one leg. I was completely limited in movment for 3 years, unable to run, cycle or anything, and I had to endure months of physical therapy from hydrotherapy to electrical stulimulus therapy. If this hospital had bothered to preform the basic, necessary checks, this would have been avoided. After asking for an apology from them I got an extremely late reply stating that is wasn't their fault. Even though I displayed every single classic symptom of the injury I had sustained. This hospital should be ashamed of itself for making me live in a brace for 3 years when it could have been easily avoided.
