Super place to go for a Mother's Day Sunday lunch outing from London. Very welcoming over the phone. No problem when we were a bit late for our booking. Great service. Wonderful and plentiful food reasonably priced. Very happy to accommodate our three very young girls.
The worst pub, and i didn't even set foot inside the place. So it's a Sunday afternoon and 6 of us set off for a 10 mile walk. Age range is 42 to 65. As part of our route it takes us past some nice places and recommends this pub. I called a head to book a table for us all and this is how it went, Me, hello mate, is there any chance of booking a table for 6 in about 1 hours time please? Barman, first of all I'm not your mate and, depending on how you behave will depend on if your staying. Needless to say I was taken back but proceeded to book a table as we all needed to eat. I didn't eat in this pub and never will. What I did do was pop in on the way past and had a polite word with the land lady and expressed my point on how disgusted we all are with the way in which I was spoken to. I will be making a compliant against this pub, I will also be contacting the makers of any guide books, like the one I was using, and informing them about this poor service. O, and i didn't even get an apology, uter disgrace.
Went in for the first time with other CAMRA members. For a pub of this size to have six excellent real ales on tap all of which are LOCALE compliant without them even knowing just shows what a committed landlady can achieve. Food stunning. It may be accused of being a little too gastro but there are plenty of english classics on the menu, I had beer battered fish and chips, but it was seas bream ! And it was delicious. We spoke with the chef and I have no concerns about him losing his way. We heard how this place has been brought back from the dead and if that required a French Celebrity chef then so be it, too many pubs in similar locations are gone forever. The beers are extremely well kept, the choice was superb and it will thrive on that alone. £2.90 per pint even for the higher gravity beers must be commended. It puts many a local venue to shame. Superb !
Pricey £12 quid for a big ploughmans but exactly what we needed as a mid way along a walk. Great for vegetarians which is unusual for a rural pub. The barman was a character - off putting at first but very friendly and a good laugh. Recommended.
The food was mediocre at best, but it was the extra insult of the astonishing rip-off prices that really left a bad taste in our mouths. £36.00 for what should have cost a tenner. I had the find the fish Fish Cakes, which were obviously home-made but not in a good way. I would have preferred the frozen ASDA version. 98% potato and salt. My partners meal was chicken in a white wine sauce with rice. Imagine a non-descript plate of pure white, half of it a gelatinous sauce complete with skin and plain rice. My new potatoes would have been new 4 months ago. Everything covered in dried parsley, at the height of summer some fresh herbs would have been not much of a stretch. AVOID AT ALL COSTS....have a packet of crisps and save your appetite for somewhere else.
The Sunday roast was awful. The roasted chicken is basically boiled chicken. Another dish that my friend order was the roasted pork and again is boiled pork slice with tasteless gravy sauce. Definitely not with 12.9 pounds per dish.
A real gem of a pub. A roaring fire, warm welcome and great beer and food. So lovely to find a truly characterful rural pub. Make the most of it - there are not many like this left.
So guiet, great local beers good food. Event room at rear that is just right for smaller to medium gatherings - we normally have 20-30.
This is a locals pub mostly but they certainly make visitors welcome. Only ever called on for beers when hill walking but over the years we almost feel regulars
Very good atmosphere and one of the most friendly pubs I know, don't listen to the other reviews the food is brilliant and the roast is amazing on a Sunday.
