Sad to say this place is going rapidly downhill. I loved it when I first joined 18 months ago, but it’s not the same anymore. The instructors are amazing, but the only saving grace. The gym is packing the place out with kids classes but providing no dedicated family changing. Kids of all ages get lumped in with the adults. Adults can’t enjoy the spa in peace anymore! Classes are all over-subscribed. And it’s dirty now too, with more members but no more cleaning being done. For a place that charges £70 per month I think we deserve better.

I had a free week pass from my work place to use at any Nuffield gym. I checked into the nearest to me and explained why I was there. A lady was assigned to me as a personal trainer and we got talking on what my needs were. That day she took me through some equipment and she allowed me to have a go. After the training or assessment, we agreed to meet at a specific time in my next visit. Unknown to her, the person who booked me in and the lady who the receptionist informed about my pass didn't explain that it wasn't a programme I came for but to use the gym. I didn't know how it worked as well so I had to figure out what to do next though I had never worked out before nor did I know how you use most equipment apart from the ones I was taught or seen outside or on TV. I was disappointed. The only reason why I gave a 3 star was because I was given an MOT check for blood pressure, heart fitness and so on and the guy took me through some exercises I could do at home. Pretty intense circuit training! The last check was with a physio too which I couldn't booked because the lady there was not available and I couldn't get a lady physio elsewhere within their southwest region! I got in touch with there head office and was told to cone on the following week after my pass expired meaning I would have to pay even though the fault was theirs. ( I sent a message to check up on a physio but got no reply so I had to keep calling different branches who redirected me to the head office). I am happy I found some work out on you tube which were of help and another gym where i can pay less and still work out .

***UPDATE*** 3 months later, nothing has been done about this...*** I have waited about 11 months into Nuffield's takeover of this gym before posting my review. I've been a member for about 3 years, and like many other reviewers, I agree it has regrettably got noticeably worse under Nuffield. The one stand-out positive for me is the reception staff, who are way more professional, polite, and informed than the really rude Virgin Active receptionists. My main gripe is that two of the three disco lights in the spinning class room have had dead bulbs since Autumn 2016 (it's now July 2017!), despite the spinning class instructors bringing it up with the management numerous times. I even emailed them myself and had no reply. Does cycling in a totally dark room sound like fun to you? That's right, it isn't. In addition, half of the bikes (no exaggeration) have something wrong with them, so you have to get there early to find a half-decent one, or cobble one together by swapping bits between bikes. There will now be a copy and paste response to this from Nuffield that says my experience is regrettable. Instead of that, I suggest that someone posts a proper response with clear resolutions so that people reading this can see that Nuffield actually cares. How many members of the Nuffield management does it take to change a light bulb? Only one of course...they just need to be bothered enough to do it :)

It’s a shame I cant give a zero star rating. This gym is NOT worth the fees they charge - they appear to have had a double boost recently of the new year joining crowd and the recent closing of virgin active. This however has resulted in a over crowded facility and the scummyness of the gym and the changing rooms/toilets/shower area has increased. The cleaning staff are a bit condescending and lazy, too busy talking or complaining to members than actually cleaning. Having to actively ask for a towel each time also is exhausting. You have to ask each time, then they check you have the right account, then they reluctantly give you a towel. Towels are only available 75% of the time due to poor management. The equipment in the gym is often broken or dodgy and the entire place has this out dated feel to it. The ‘spa’ facility is often scummy and crowded in particular. The steam room is operational circa 30% of the time. There is this huge area on the ground floor, which is hugely under utilised and there could well be a better use of this space with a tiny bit of imagination. I would recommend avoiding this gym if you can make it to the alternatives in the local area.

Someone broke into my locker while I was training in the gym. They stole my coat with my keys and wallet. I complained to the gym staff and checked my car. That was gone. The gym staff were helpful initially by reporting it to the police etc. However it’s been a month since my car was stolen and still the gym has been unable to download the cctv to provide the police. They’re just coming up with the same excuses again and again. I’ve waited long enough but now I’ve lost my patience.
