I arrived today with children who were very excited about the short ride on the train pushed by a very old diesel locomotive, there is also a small part inside that can be visited, there is also a very chic cafe in a train carriage, everything is supported of volunteers who try to keep this place alive. As a rule, it is only open on Sundays, although the previous visit was close, it must be checked before arriving here. It is worth visiting to experience a trip in time/past.
Volunteers at the railway were very friendly and social with them talking about their current and future projects.nEnjoyed my time there and riding on the brake van train ride through the park surrounded by the trees. It is a small place, with big plans and big projects slowly making their way through the line towards completion and am looking forward for what next they have planned.
The short section of railway line runs through the Hunsbury Hill Country Park where there is a very large Iron Age hill fort. The railway is only open with trains for a few Sundays a year so if you want to ride do check first. The park is good fun anyway with a well equipped play area.
In normal times, this works as a small, nice area for serious train enthusiasts, with a bit of history in the workshop, a small shop/café in a passenger carriage further along , and a very small playground right next to it. If you are after quick-moving excitement, such as a ride on their sometimes available diesel train, then this isn't for you. It's extremely slow, goes along a straight line, comes to a stop just a bit further up through the Hunsbury Hill park, and then back again. The volunteer engineer enthusiasts of this site is in constant hope that someone will one day provide them with enough funding to allow them to restore an abandoned track that loops itself around the area. It would be much more fun for everyone, engineers and visitors alike.nnThe gated train area is small, not open a great deal, but seems to be well loved by those who keep it running. They run the diesel train on a Halloween weekend, and a Santa train during the December weekends. Again, more something for serious train enthusiasts and smaller children on the days the diesel is up and running ever so slowly. For parents of young children, know that the sound of the diesel train can be very scary in their sensitive ears, so be careful going too closely on days when it's up and running.
Full membership at a Heritage railway for only £10 per year. How can you lose out on that? A real friendly bunch of lively enthusiasts. Careful to go out of the way to be considerate in every respect. Loving this.
