In normal times, this works as a small, nice area for serious train enthusiasts, with a bit of history in the workshop, a small shop/café in a passenger carriage further along , and a very small playground right next to it. If you are after quick-moving excitement, such as a ride on their sometimes available diesel train, then this isn't for you. It's extremely slow, goes along a straight line, comes to a stop just a bit further up through the Hunsbury Hill park, and then back again. The volunteer engineer enthusiasts of this site is in constant hope that someone will one day provide them with enough funding to allow them to restore an abandoned track that loops itself around the area. It would be much more fun for everyone, engineers and visitors alike. The gated train area is small, not open a great deal, but seems to be well loved by those who keep it running. They run the diesel train on a Halloween weekend, and a Santa train during the December weekends. Again, more something for serious train enthusiasts and smaller children on the days the diesel is up and running ever so slowly. For parents of young children, know that the sound of the diesel train can be very scary in their sensitive ears, so be careful going too closely on days when it's up and running.
The short section of railway line runs through the Hunsbury Hill Country Park where there is a very large Iron Age hill fort. The railway is only open with trains for a few Sundays a year so if you want to ride do check first. The park is good fun anyway with a well equipped play area.
Full membership at a Heritage railway for only £10 per year. How can you lose out on that? A real friendly bunch of lively enthusiasts. Careful to go out of the way to be considerate in every respect. Loving this.
Really helpful and knowledgeable volunteers Nice little railway in need of more volunteers and funding.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
A nice little museum with great volunteers. They were brilliant with my son, showing him around the cab of the loco and he had a great time!
A problem is Google is still incorrectly showing wrong postcode. It should be NN4 9UW
Really don't like leaving bad reviews but have to be honest - the 'Santa Train' was awful.. Couldn't work out where to go at first - the 'waiting area' was like something out of a horror film didn't want my 2 year old to touch anything to be honest. The train itself was basic - couldn't even see out the windows and the only thing vaguely festive was a bit of tinsel on the ceiling .. The worst part though was Santa himself - the outfit was filthy and he was totally inappropriate talking about hitting and shooting the elf that forgot the presents the present itself was the best part - decent crayons and a sticker book for a 2 1/2 year old. He seemed like he'd either been drinking or just didn't know how to act or what to say around children .. It could be a lovely experience if someone spent some money but it's really just a cheap grotty and badly organised experience that shouldn't be allowed to keep going in it's current state.
Google says 'open today': the notice board showed open today Remembrance Sunday. So we went in, and were told quite positively that "We are not open to the public today." I think a simple anatomy lesson would be in order here. Do you know which is your elbow? I have just checked on the web-site nirt.co.uk, which I find is promoting Hallowe'en Train Rides on 30/31 October! No mention of Christmas running. Yes, I know you are volunteers, but if you depend on visitors for funding your play, you need to get your act together.
We had fantastic day out with volunteers at Ironstone Railway , they are amazing bunch, enthusiastic, knowledgeable, kind , showed us around, could see that so much work needs to be done to keep this place going, we will do our best and support this great cause
It was quite interesting; although our experience with the Christmas "Train ride with Santa" event wasn't great. Despite booking in advance, they had no record of us and thus no present. They -did- get that sorted out but it was all a bit awkward. Also the train ride itself was disappointing. There were no windows in the carriage so it was just like being in a dusty, cramped box for a few minutes.
