National Trust - Cragside

Story

Cragside is a Victorian country house near the town of Rothbury in Northumberland, England. It was the home of William Armstrong, 1st Baron Armstrong, founder of the Armstrong Whitworth armaments firm. An industrial magnate, scientist, philanthropist and inventor of the hydraulic crane and the Armstrong gun, Armstrong also displayed his inventiveness in the domestic sphere, making Cragside the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power. The entire estate was technologically advanced, equipped with "wonderful hydraulic machines that do all sorts of things". In the grounds, Armstrong built dams and created lakes to power a sawmill, a water-powered laundry, early versions of a dishwasher and a dumb waiter, a hydraulic lift and a hydroelectric rotisserie. In 1887, Armstrong was ennobled as Baron Armstrong of Cragside, taking his title from the house, the first engineer and the first scientist to be made a member of the British peerage.

Wow! We were a bit overwhelmed as where to start so we went in the house which was an amazing experience. Then we ate our picnic overlooking the lake and called to the shop. We walked to the pump house through some beautiful gardens. Then we drove to the fantastic children's area as time was ticking on When we go again we will walk to the children's play area early have lunch walk back and then look at the house. Too much to do in one day but a great day out and a good place to meet up with family and friends. In our own National Trust places to visit league table we put Cragside in a league of its own.

Absolutely love Cragside, there are so many things to see both in the house and the grounds. We were amazed at all the labour saving gadgets there including the first ever dish washer and the demonstrations around electricity were fascinating. The grounds are beautifully kept and driving round the estate we were planning where we would walk and picnic when the weather improves. It is virtually impossible to do everything in a day and it is good value for money. Highly recommended.

I have visited many times over the years and, in my view, Cragside is the best of the NT properties. The walk up to the lake is wonderful. The house is fascinating with it's watered powered kitchen equipment and hydroelectric power systems. The gardens are lovely. The childrens play area is excellent. For those not so good on their feet the estate drive gives a great opportunity to see the views including the lakes. The food is the usual NT high quality. I always have a great day at Cragside.

Fabulous place with loads to do. We walked the Armstrong trail which had lots of interesting engineering facts and took in the Archimedes screw and the power house which was very hands on and kid friendly. We toured the house - the spa and the amazing fireplace (wow, never seen anything like that!) were our favourites. We then went on the estate drive which was very narrow but the kids loved the playpark. We wanted to do the labyrinth but ran out of time. We'll definitely be back!

What an amazing place! We could have spent three days exploring the vast, picturesque grounds. So much to see and do; we didn't have time to do it all in one day. The labyrinth was wonderful to walk round and the children enjoyed seeing the carved figures (especially meeting William the Wizard!). The drive round the estate took us more than half an hour - we kept stopping to take photographs! That might not be possible on a summer's day with more visitors though. The house is incredible! So much to see, and actually get your hands on. The boys were delighted to be allowed to play a game of snooker on the full size table (I wouldn't have liked to carry it up all those stairs!). The room with details of Armstrong's experiments is fascinating for children and adults alike - presented in such a fun and eye-catching way. There's nothing to not like about the house and gardens. The boys were disappointed that they couldn't get to do the hands-on experiments. Those activities only run in school holidays, and although it was half term for us, it wasn't in the local area. The only other disappointment was the cafe. Although the food and drink were lovely (the curd tart comes highly recommended!), the prices were exorbitant. We bought a drink and cake each (we're a family of 5) and it came to only about a couple of pounds less than we paid that evening for a meal and drinks for us all. But these are small things overall and we will be back at Cragside next time we're in the area!
