One of Europe’s oldest timber-framed buildings, Grange Barn stands as a lasting reminder of the once-powerful Coggeshall Abbey. With oak pillars soaring up to a cathedral-like roof, bearing the weight of centuries, it was saved and restored in the 1980s. This 13th-century building has truly stood the test of time.
Ancient monastic barn saved from near collapse by local villagers and later given to the National Trust.nOne would think there's little to an empty barn but the volunteer guides have a great deal of information on the barns history which covers some 800 years!nThere are also information boards inside plus a short video showing the extensive work required to restore the barn to its former glory.nThere is more to see in the nearby village, ruins of the former monastery and a museum. Both are free to enter.nEntry to Grange Barn is free to National Trust members of £5.50 for non members. Parking is free for all.nPlease note that there are no toilet facilities on site.nThere is no tea room but you can buy hot and cold drinks, crisps and sweets.nBooking to visit Grange Barn is not necessary.nIf you are visiting here, National Trusts Paycock House is just 5 minutes away and it's easy to visit both in a day.nPlease remember to book Paycock House on their website

Amazing medieval barn, built in the mid-1200's, making it one of the oldest standing timber-framed buildings in Europe. It was restored in the 1980's, and now looks incredible. The interior is large, and contains a few small displays on agriculture, Coggeshall Abbey to which this barn belonged and the barn itself. Car park is spacious, toilets on site and tickets also allow you to visit the nearby Paycocke's house, an early Tudor timber-framed merchants house near the main road. Well worth a visit!
I have been driving past this place for years and never been in, until recently. The site is run by the NT and the barn is interesting to wandering around. There is no a lot to see here, but it worth taking a look if you are passing!
