Historic house in a quaint village in Essex. Gives a great sense and feel of the history of the town and area. Lovely but small tea room.

A stunning example of National Trust care. The building was restored to resemble the original occupants, and the feeling is very immersive and educational. It's a bit off the beaten path as the village isn't on a train line, but it means you can wander through the building with no sense of rush, and enjoy having a cream tea in the gardens.

Built at the start of the 16th Century, as a wedding present, Paycocke's is as charming an example of Tudor-era architecture as you could wish for. Painstakingly restored, the house itself is a maze of rooms and stairs, with ornate woodwork at every turn. If you're into late medieval history and architecture, this really is a must-see property. Paycocke's gardens are also of a decent size, with numerous places to sit and lounge on a sunny day, and the coffee shop serves excellent baked goods. Well worth taking a couple of hours to see, if you're exploring this picturesque village. Pro-Tip: Parking is scarce around this property, and indeed throughout the village itself. You're best off leaving your car at the nearby National Trust - Grange Barn, as your ticket for Paycocke's also covers entry to that property.

It's small and you should probably look around to park elsewhere, but my wife and I really enjoyed it as National Trust members. The local town is lovely. Steeped in history, and there were members of a weavers, spinners and haberdashers guild were present passing on history from hundreds of years ago. The gardens were also small, but very well presented.
