Not for everyone. While the museum undoubtedly has some fascinating music boxes, polyphony, barrel organ, early phonographs and player pianos, the previous layout was more spacious. You hear the exhibits but have little chance to examine them in detail.

The fashion for mechanical music was at its height in the 19th and early 20th centuries, in the drawing rooms of the wealthy. To enter this bygone world of enchantment one has only to travel to Keith Harding’s World of Mechanical Music in the Cotswold town of Northleach. Exemplary guides present live entertainment on every tour, and one can look forward to a fascinating and lively commentary to accompany the crystalline magic of musical boxes, pianos that play by themselves, one-man ‘orchestrion’ bands which never tire, and birds that flutter and sing to order. The museum shop offers a delightful and affordable selection of toys, model kits, books and recordings, as well as rolls for self-playing piano enthusiasts. Exquisite clocks and musical boxes, both antique and new, are also available for sale.

Being transformed into the world of musical boxes, wax cylinders and mechanical piano players was a delightful experience. Fascinating tour with live demonstrations.
