Story

At Marchmont Takeaway we offer the traditional Scottish takeaway that you all know and love with an extra dose of fun and banter! (that's banter, not batter!) - The taste of a proper chippy chip...there could NOT be a better comfort food in the world right?!

Now, we love a tasty chippy supper, but we also love our planet!
We care about the environment and how we impact the sea, so you will find mackerel and coley, among other fish and traditional supper options, on our fantastic menu.

My favourite chippy in town. The staff are very friendly and chatty; the food is always fresh out of the frier. It's a small shop and yet they've got all you want. Sometimes they serve mackerel, which is really a rarity. Most importantly, what you get there is good value for money!

The best cod you can find anywhere. Definately the best fish and chips in edinburgh. The customer service is an 100/10. They couldnt be any friendlier. They are chatty and make you feel very welcome. It is so cheap for the quality of fish you are buying. If you don't go there in your life time you haven't lived life. Cannot believe they are not millionaires yet!!

Been in here as a paying customer more then a few times and when I went in tonight to buy a portion of fish cakes(to be fair adequately cooked ) I asked if they had any red sauce and she said there were 50p I declined it but never complained about the price at the time. As I was leaving without complaint ,she was right cheeky telling me loudly in front of a couple of Marchmont types , that "you don't get something for nothing " which was totally unnecessary and rude because I never asked for a freebie. I was prepared to do without. However cause she made a big deal about it I started thinking on it. if I'd actually have been bothered there and then I'd have replied " in Edinburgh you don't even get something for value these days and yes , 50p for a wee sachet (smaller then the kind you'll get in , service stations , Mcdonalds or KFC for free when you spend a similar amount ) is a rip off thinking about it and considering even loads of small cafe's don't charge for a bit of sauce. So much for community ethos. But the way she come out with it was needless and patronising the kind of behaviour you'd expect in a school canteen. When I've even paid for one lately its been no more then 10p or 20p and that's in other independent chip shops. The fish suppers might be cheap(for todays South Edinburgh) but the portions are much smaller and oilier(not in a fresh tasting way either ) then elsewhere . Up till now I've used it cause its relatively close , I'll definitely gan the extra mile to go elsewhere , when buying similar food to avoid being made to feel like a scrounger in future in yuppy ville. While we are on it chip shops always used to have both red and brown sauce on the counter , would places like Brattisani's have charged for slapping a bit of red sauce on ? if my memory serves me right they did not and those were in the days when chip shops were real bona fide down to earth eateries that didn't need to manufacture a sense of community spirit.

Wonderful conversation and fantastic food- these ladies know how to make the best fresh fish and chips!! Cheapest I’ve found in the area, and large portions. Would highly recommend.
