I attended Manchester Metropolitan University in 1999, and unfortunately, it was a disappointing experience. After two years, I transferred to another university where I earned a first-class degree, and student of the year, and got 98.5 percent average across my 9 subjects. The key difference was that my new university offered online lessons and fostered an inclusive environment, unlike Manchester Met, which still relied on paper and pens and discrimination. This is a little corrupt in my view. Manchester Met had an extremely challenging math test in the first year, which resulted in 85% of students failing. Despite the university securing funding for those students for three years, many didn't make it past the first year. I only passed because I had private tutoring, but most of my classmates were not as fortunate. Additionally, I faced significant issues with the course leader of consumer product course, she was having an affair with a student and would turn up in leather outfits on a Friday --- very odd now when I am a middle aged women. When I complained to her about the noise from a lift in my halls of residence affecting my sleep, to her she took a dislike to me. She retaliated by marking down all my assignments. My grades dropped from A's to C's simply because I voiced a concern. I hope she is not still working there. After transferring to my new university and leaving Manchester I earned a first-class degree and won awards. I have since worked for some of the largest companies in the world, serving millions in my profession and fame has come with this. I'm now in my 40s and reflect. And, realize what a strange experience it was. It's an experience I will never forget. My course was in consumer technology. I suppose a stepping stone to my success but a negative experience all the same.
Manchester Metropolitan University is a fantastic university, which has made, and continues to make significant investment in its campus buildings, infrastructure, and public realm. The university has an excellent reputation for student experience, satisfaction, and teaching excellence. It has also recently improved its reputation around research impact.
The university is pretty much you attend lecturers , however there’s not much support , you can email and expect to get a reply a week later. The lecturers are generally quite nice but they may need a reminder not to make students feel stupid because there is a knowledge gap between students and lecturers. The community is nice, the union is very helpful annd have lots of societies to get involved with - although the receptionist teams have been disrespectful. Particularly the ladies in business and brooks. You can ask them a generic question and they will reply back with attitude and discontent with their job , not accommodating at all.
This is a money minting University. If you are postgraduate student, especially an international one, then trust me, you are in for a tough ride. First of all, administrative staff is rude, no sense of academic sensitivity, no compassion of working in an educational institution, lazy people. This University does not offer accommodation to postgraduate students, so you end up paying more in private student halls, daily commuting and dealing with unprofessionalism of private housing. Now abt teaching, University relies mostly on guest speakers, regular lecturers tutors are under qualified to teach pg students. The university has only invested in the business school and rest of the faculties struggle heavily. The rankings is based on undergraduate student experience which does not reflect facts of teaching quality, student facilities and academic research. Overcrowded and unorganised university which lacks seriousness from the management. UG students are partying everyday, boozing and drug addicts. They simply love this partying vibe of manchester city. Knowledge and skill development is far away from this University. An expensive affair to conclude.
Horrible experience with the graduation team. I graduated last year. I made repeated attempts to contact the graduation team to let them know I wanted to register as I hadn’t received an email and they kept telling me to call back again in a few weeks when the graduation registration opens. When I would ask for a specific date for when I should call back, they would always say that they can’t provide a specific date but for me to call back in a few weeks. I did this 3 times and was told to call back again in a few weeks again. When I called in the 4th time they said that the graduation registration had closed and so I couldn’t be added to this years graduation but they could add me to next years graduation. I accepted my fate and asked if I could be added now and they said no that I had to get in touch the next year to do it. I repeated the same process calling in February, March and April of this year each time being told the same thing - to call back in a few weeks. When I eventually called back in may they told me the same thing- the graduation registration has closed and I have to be deferred to next year. I argued my case saying that I have been trying to register for 2 years and the operator didn’t care about my struggles and told me they can’t look back on phone records, don’t record calls or keep notes of calls even though I have been told many times before when I call that they do, she eventually passed the phone to her manager Rachel Halton who said she would look into it. She asked me to provide evidence of when I had contacted them which I did. She then asked me to provide the number I had called from which I did. She then came back to me saying that of the evidence I showed her of the times I called that she could only find 1 record of me calling and that it wasn’t enough to support a case for late registration. So turns out that in fact they are able to look at phone records! She has told me that I need to defer AGAIN to graduate and attend the ceremony. But now, I don’t feel that there is anything special to it. 4 years of hard work to be left feeling completely unaccomplished. This university don’t care about their students and can’t even after adding to their figures of graduates, can’t even help you to celebrate what should feel like an achievement. Avoid attending this uni!!!
I attended Manchester Metropolitan as an international student on an exchange year, and have been completely astounded by the ignorance and incompetence of the administration from the start. Before even moving to Manchester, the MMU team allotted me a student number that was already assigned to another student, resulting in my inability to secure on-campus housing despite the university ‘guaranteeing’ that I would be able to do so. I have wasted thousands of pounds and countless hours dealing with the inadequacy of this school, and will tell anyone to not do the same and avoid MMU like the plague.
If you want to waste thousands of pounds, you choose the right university. There are loads of mistakes and problems when it comes to paper work. Double check and triple check EVERYTHING - your transcript most importantly. It's so hard to imagine that a UK based university that just celebrated 200 years of educating people can make such mistakes. They say something, and act the other way. Your dissertation supervisor might disappear on writing their own article while you don't know what to do with your dissertation and desperately waiting for them to answer your emails or set a meeting. I had only one meeting for the whole process of dissertation. Studying here is among one of my biggest mistakes in life. Don't waste your precious time and hard earned money here. There are better options out there.
I've literally just left this university and I really tried to like this university, honestly I did. I moved three flats because I wanted a better experience. The first flat I was in was extremely unclean with the bins been overstocked with food and rubbish and the sink filled up with plates which were there for up to a month. It was vile to be honest. One of the flatmates parents came in to wash the plates for the flatmate, which was shocking. I was given dirty looks by the flatmate and the parent. The flatmates were angry at me for leaving, even though I wasn't close with them. The amount of hostility I was targeted with was unwarranted and disgusting. I think racism was at play, I really do. Bear in mind I did not let them know how i was feeling with the uncleanness. I was extremely kind to them. The second flat the people were crazy, I was told off for how I cooked chicken. The fact I didn't wash my hands before cooking chicken even though I wasn't cooking for them and also how I touched the surfaces and didn't clean the knives. I was told that the way I coughed was killing a certain flatmate. I was told off for having my bowls and dishes out. I was treated like a slave and an outsider. I tried to report it but they closed the case. The uni and how they handled it was absolutely shocking. The third flat was the best one I was in but things became complicated rather quickly. I've dropped out of uni now due to mental health. The uni is a joke. The only thing good was the English course I was on but even then, there was a girl who was in the same workshop as me and she knew the struggles I went through in the second flat I was in and I asked the tutor if I could be moved they said no regardless of how I felt. The uni is a joke. Manchester as a city is nice but mmu is not.

Whether you’re interested in participating in various student societies or accessing resources for academic and professional development, Manchester Metropolitan University offers a comprehensive and supportive environment for its students.
Completely noney making University. That's the verdict. One of the biggest universities in the UK, having more than 5000 International students yet they don't have university owned student accommodation for postgraduates. How terrible is this? MMU promotes private student halls with whom they have ties and costs 200 per week and are in awful conditions. Food expenses, phone bill and local travel will add upto 100 pounds more per week to your expenses. Just because Manchester is a party city, students are high most of the time, that doesn't mean, Apart from Business school, MMU is NOT great in academics, they lack competent staff. Teaching is carried out by undereducated or sometimes non related people. MMU lacks various student facilities, they high tuition fees as well. Administrative staff is rude and lazy. Do not go by rankings.
