Manchester Central Convention Complex

Story

Manchester Central Convention Complex is an exhibition and conference centre converted from the former Manchester Central railway station in Manchester, England. Designed by Sir John Fowler, the station, the northern terminus for services to London St Pancras, was opened in July 1880 by the Cheshire Lines Committee. The structure has a distinctive arched roof with a 64-metre span - the second-largest railway station roof span in the United Kingdom, and was granted Grade II* listed building status in 1963.After 89 years as a railway terminus, it closed to passengers in May 1969 and became an abandoned railway station. It was renovated as an exhibition centre formerly known as the G-Mex Centre in 1982. From 1986 to 1995 it was Manchester's primary music concert venue until the construction of the Manchester Arena. The venue was refitted in 2008 to host conferences, exhibitions and is Manchester's secondary large concert venue.HistoryManchester Central railway stationThe complex was originally Manchester Central railway station, one of the city's main railway terminals. It was built between 1875 and 1880 and was closed to passengers on 5 May 1969. The station served as the terminus for Midland Railway express trains to London St Pancras. The station's large arched roof – a huge wrought-iron single-span arched roof, spanning 210ft, 550ft long and 90ft high – was a noted piece of railway engineering and is the widest unsupported iron arch in Britain after the Barlow train shed at London St Pancras.

It's a convention centre so your experience will change from mine depending on what you go to see.nnWhat I can tell you is the place is huge, being a former railway station, and the facilities are great. It's right in the center of Manchester and only a very short walk from their public transport network. Do yourself a favour, don't try to park nearby, use the park and ride service for a hassle free trip.
Great venue and friendly staff. Thank you for hosting the Green Party conference and allowing it to live up to it’s wonderful expectations
A fantastic little venue. We went to watch a mixed doubles snooker tournament. We really enjoyed the venue. Unfortunately the beer prices are extremely expensive which I think is ridiculous to charge. £13 for two tins of Red stripe in a plastic glass is to me not really acceptable. That aside it is a lovely place to visit.
Great venue. It's hard to write a review here as the venue is used by organisers and they alter the inside for the event, so experiences will vary.nnBut it's in a great location with good onside parking and literally the city is 30s walk from any entrance/exit
Went for a conference. The building is decent enough but could do with better signage outside for different events being run.nnThe centre itself is decent and the toilets are clean. Depending on what you are there for depends on the food options available. Ours had the usual over priced coffee and sandwiches which is standard at any conference!!nnUpdate 2023: same over priced food ... Same over priced coffee.nnUpdate 05/2024.n£2.30 for a bottle of water and £2.50 for a Fanta. Complete rip off!!!!
