A wonderful, atmospheric place to visit - the old Victorian part, obviously. Designed by Joseph Paxton, it has winding paths amongst stately old trees, and contains a small Victorian chapel, now unused. The tombstones are marvellous, adorned with their huge angels and anchors. It's a place for contemplation and a lovely stroll. I'd hate its seclusion to be spoiled when restoration work is done, but as it's a listed Grade 1 cemetery of historic interest that's unlikely to happen. Definitely a beautiful hidden gem for lovers of history and and old graveyards.

The cemetery is bisected by the railway line - the part closest to the city centre was laid out by Joseph Paxton partly as an arboretum with many rare trees still surviving. The undulating landscape reflects its origins as a quarry - the paved paths looping around the site make it an ideal place for interval training - it's a delightful place to go for a run.
