Not exactly a contemporary dining experience, but if you're after some comfortable French home cooking this is a good choice. Some of the execution left a bit to be desired and the presentation was a little dated, but flavours were good and everything tasted as we'd expected. We found the service to be very friendly and attentive - not easy when the restaurant was totally packed. Price was perhaps a little high given smallish portions and a general lack of finesse, but this was definitely not expensive for a restaurant in East Dulwich.
I've seen other reviews for this restaurant and to be honest I couldn't disagree more with the negative reviews its received. French food is one of my favourite cuisines and I've just come back from living in France so I think I'm qualified to give an opinion. I found their food to be of a very high standard. The service was excellent, the staff there were very friendly and the decor couldn't be more french unless you plucked it from its foundations and planted it in Paris. It wasn't expensive either. My friend and I had 3 courses and 2 bottles of wine and the bill was under £100. I recommend this restaurant to anyone that enjoys good food
I came here this evening after purchasing a deal on wowcher but after reading several reviews posted here I was very tempted not to bother. However, I am very glad I did. The restaurant is very pleasant and has good ambience to it, I felt very at ease there. The service is unobtrusive and the food is delicious. Both I and my partner totally enjoyed our evening and the food we had. Would I recommend it to anybody? Definitely!! Would I go back? Most certainly when I find myself near Dulwich. The menu has a great selection to chose from and the prices seem fair. If I could change anything, I'd like to see linen napkins instead of paper ones and maybe have French music in the background rather than classical but it was pleasing to the ears anyway And maybe the manageress to come and say hello and ask how our meal was, though it was great. Thank you for a thoroughly enjoyable evening and delicious food Le Chardon. To anyone thinking of having a meal there don't be put off by negative reviews try it out for yourself if you find yourself in that part of London. I'm glad I did!
Not even worth a single star, after reading multiple abysmal reviews of this restaurant I became slightly apprehensive but ever the optimist was more than prepared to give them a chance to prove themselves however after god awful customer service on several points of contact and even worse in person. Myself and my partner never even got to try the food as we were so appalled by the customer service we removed ourselves from the restaurant shortly after being seated which would easily explain why we were the only customers in the restaurant. A picture paints a thousand words and an empty restaurant says it all. I would highly recommend avoiding this restaurant.
Fantastic location/building, an old butchers I think that makes for a great restaurant. Let down by an overly ambitious menu, think it offers nearly every French dish you can think of, so really got the impression they are jack of all French dishes. More menu focus and tighter service wouldn't go amiss here, as its a potentially amazing place!
Love this place. We've been here three or four times since moving to the area and the food has always been fantastic - just like a proper neighbourhood French bistro. The dauphinoise potates are heavenly, and the fish of the day is always worth getting. And save room for the apple tart. Will, who waited on us, is friendly and hilarious, and his wine recommendations are always spot on.
All in all, mediocre. Two of us just returned from dinner at Le Chardon in Dulwich, which while expectations were low due to the average reviews online, failed to satisfy on any level. Food: The snail starter was ok, however the remaining dishes were poor. The foie gras was over-brandied, accompanied by old toast that was flavourless and crumbly; the seafood platter was overcooked clearly boiled up a while ago; and the corn fed chicken with leeks was tasteless. Service: the staff made a slight effort but overall lacked any enthusiasm or interest. Atmosphere: This was the most pleasant part of the meal. We sat next to a friendly couple, and the place had a bustling vibe to it. Overall: While our taste of london card lessened the damage on what would have been a wildly over-priced meal £75 incl. one glass of wine, and the facade is convincing, the experience will not be repeated. I recommend giving this place a miss unless unlike us, you find a dish that was well-produced.
DO NOT EAT HERE! The service ruined the whole experience. Unbelievably rude inadequate and lacklustre! In a near empty restaurant it took 20 minutes to be give a menu. two women who arrived around the same time left after 20 minutes without seeing a menu or being met by any member of staff. The waiter who obviously saw us made no attempt to get our order until being asked three times. Instead he sat behind the bar talking to another waitress. They made us feel unwelcome and awkward. This was the general feel of the restaurant. Eventually when taking our order he did not responded to any of the questions posed. LITERALLY ignored urs while taking our order. Let me say he was NOT a teenager with hormones raging who you could forgive even find amusing but instead a man in his thirties with an attitude problem. The food was over priced cold and my rump of lamb was over cooked, although specified wanting it rare. The rib eye steak was similar to beef carpaccio, flat cold and minimal. Decor dark and dingy. But the staff were quite literally infuriating. after eating all we could hear was the staff members talking about a previous costumer who complained call them fat c**ts. PLEASE DO NOT GO HERE! My experience made me create an account and write my first ever review it was that bad. .
I have eaten at this restaurant a number of times in the last three years, both at lunch and in the evenings. On every occasion the French bistro style menu has been excellent and the choice great. The food served has been consistently good on all occasions over the years and service usually decent. I am however sad to report that I will never be dining at Le Chardon again after my experience last Saturday. A regular user of GroupOn, I bought a voucher for Le Chardon giving me money off the final bill. What I didn't buy however was to be argued with at the end of my meal by an overly officious and aggressive restaurant manager. From nowhere my boyfriend and I were accused incorrectly of ignoring the Ts&Cs of the voucher and when we tried to explain the situation we were argued with further and continuously talked over. Despite sepaking clamly and quietly the manager responded to us with a raised voice more than once. Quite an amazing experience to have the proprietor of a restaurant talk to you like you'd just stolen from them and refuse to back down or apologise even when confronted with Ts&Cs of a voucher. Needless to say it ruined what was a lovely evening and I urge anyone planning a relaxing dinner to avoid this place like the plague. As the old saying goes.....The customer is always right, except when you're the Manager of Le Chardon.....
Merde... ? Yes totally ! Good bits : waitress that's running like a bee and saving the place. Bad bits : after 1h of waiting we've been notified that chef forgot about our order so we may want to order some nibbles! We waited more and got well done burned steak on the medium- well order. Obviously charged on everything over £75. Seriously - AVOID !!! They charge £1.50 for bread given with starters. WTF?!
