More important than pirates and smugglers, who notoriously dominated the town’s dark past, Rye has earned its more endearing fame, in the last century, as a haven for both English and American writers and poets. In January 1726, the ship carrying King George I ran aground near Rye on its way to London. News of the king’s unexpected arrival reached James Lamb, the town mayor of Rye, who immediately dispatched himself to meet the king. For four nights, the king stayed at Lamb’s elegant red-brick manor on Mermaid Street. The American novelist, Henry James, who opted to become a British subject later in life, took up residence in the old Lamb House in 1898 and stayed there for 16 years. Edward F. Benson, prolific English novelist of the Mapp and Lucia books fame, and his brothers Arthur and Robert who were also writers, resided at the Lamb House in 1918-1940 after Henry James passed away. The simplicity of the structure belies its historical significance, except for that marker hanging outside its wall declaring that it is so. It is located quite off the street not too far on a bend. You cannot miss the place as it stands prominently blocking a pathway of cobble-stones.

Well preserved house with lots of character and history. We were lucky enough to watch a play in the courtyard.

Although Lamb House is mildly interesting for Jamesians, the National Trust has not put enough work into the upkeep or curation of Lamb House. It's also worth remembering that the garden house in which James wrote his final three novels was destroyed in the war.

Only 3 small rooms to view. Luckily the garden is lovely and a great spot for afternoon tea

If I was thinking of joining the national trust for the first time I would be put off the idea if Lamb House was my first venue.
