Lakes Aquarium

Story

The Lakes Aquarium is an aquarium in the village of Lakeside on the southern shore of Windermere, Cumbria, England. It is one of the docking points of Windermere Lakes Cruises and also at one end of the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. It is the third most visited paying tourist attraction in CumbriaHistoryIt opened in 1997 as The Aquarium of the Lakes when the displays followed the theme of a Lake District stream, flowing down into the lake and then on to Morecambe Bay. During 2008 it was re-branded as the Lakes Aquarium, with a theme of the lakes of the world. The attraction is now owned by Spanish leisure company Parques Reunidos, who own and operate 67 parks across the world.ExhibitsThe Lakes Aquarium contains both freshwater and salt water aquatic animals.Lake DistrictThis area tells the story of the native and non native animals that can be found around the Lake District National Park. The conservation project for this area is the captive breeding and research of the endangered White Clawed Crayfish. It discusses the importance of not releasing animals from the pet trade, such as the terrapins, which can now be found surviving in the wild. All the terrapins in the aquarium were rehomed from members of the public.

A simple and fun aquarium. It's smaller than most but it's host to a collection of unique and interesting animals ranging from beautiful marine life to otters and even...ants. There's plenty of parking spaces for those who go by car. The admission prices are cheap and well worth it for what's on offer. It's a great place for the family and boasts many child friendly areas and activities. The gift shop is small but contains many wonderful souvenirs at a reasonable price that you can enjoy at any age.

Great for kids to learn about sea creatures and other water animals. Not huge so perfect to slot in with a trip on the lake cruises or steam railway. Clean and reasonably priced with friendly, helpful staff.

The otters are the stars for me. Great range of fish and other stuff. With a trip on a steamer a great place for a day trip.

This is a nice little aquarium, which is run well with an upstairs and downstairs sections . There are areas for kids to interact and a little quiz to spot clues as you go through. There weren't just aquatic animals in there, which was a nice surprise too. Well worth a visit, and in the summer, could combine with a boat ride or a steam train.

Really enjoyed our visit. It's not the biggest aquarium but I think we spent over an hour looking round. It's reasonably priced for its size although you will also need to pay a few pounds for parking as well. They had some really fascinating exhibits and it's definitely worth a visit, especially if you're stuck for something to do on a rainy day.
