Kentish Town City Farm

About

Kentish Town City Farm is a charity helping local families, offering educational, therapeutic and creative opportunities in an urban farm setting.

Story

Kentish Town City Farm is a charity providing educational, therapeutic and creative activities. It developed out of the needs of people living in an urban environment to connect with animals and nature and is a focal point for the local community today. Entrance is free but we rely on visitor donations for the upkeep of the animals.

The farm has a small core staff but depends on volunteers to help out. Children and young people are encouraged to participate in all aspects of animal care, from mucking out to helping with feeds and site maintenance. Adult volunteers also help plan and run seasonal fundraising events, holiday activities for children and help out in the farm office.

The farm has a stock of chickens, cows, ducks, geese, goats, horses, pigs and sheep with some rare breeds. They are friendly and used to visitors. Piglets and lambs are born at the farm each year.

The farm is located amidst dense local authority housing in North London, covering four and half acres, beside local train lines.

The Farm has a classroom, under 5's activity room, a training room, fitted kitchen, stables, community fruit and vegetable gardens and seating areas. It also has disabled access including hard paths and decks throughout.

As well as providing pony riding opportunities for local children the farm has also been offering Riding Therapy for children with disabilities for 40 years. We serve children with autism, learning and physical disabilities, including children who cannot walk or with limited mobility.

Please visit our website for full details of volunteering opportunities, our educational programme for schools, pre-school classes for under 5's and holiday & weekend activities, including drop-in Pony Rides for children.

The farm is open between 9-5 and open 7 days a week all year round. Everyone is welcome.

Mission

The primary aim of the farm is to address the educational and recreational needs of local people with special emphasis being placed on children and young people coming from economic or socially disadvantaged backgrounds and young people with special needs.

the staff were very cheery and welcoming. the animals here are poorly socialised & don't appreciate pets, except the cat , there are other farms if you're looking for a cheeky cuddle but, apart from the donkeys that are affected by flies, the animals seemed pretty satisfied & peaceful. it was clean around the site too, and the emphasis for animal safety through personal safety practices is highly commendable. the rough paths can be dangerous if you're not careful but the steep edges are clearly sectioned off. it appears small compared to other city farms , and i can argue that certain enclosures are far too small & don't meet the needs of the animals they house, such as the pigs and goats. however, i hope this is acknowledged without my wariness. overall, incredibly quiet, without the occasional train passing through, so a little city break for ten minutes or so.
Feels like this place has been here forever. In fact it's actually the 1st City Farm of it's ilk in the UK and opened as a charity way back in 1972. It is still a charity. And does wellbeing events for all ages. Great wee urban farm for children who might not be able to get close up and personal with livestock other than by TV or laptop. I think it's important children know where their meat and dairy products come from...! Entrance is free. Donations and volunteers are always welcomed. Has some awesome gothic looking Indonesian black chickens and a super friendly same breed black cockerel aptly named Darth Vador Can be viewed from your train seat on the Thameslink. In close proximity to Kentish Town Thameslink Overground Station. And Belsize Park Northern Line Underground Station.
It really saddens me to give me this rating, but I felt really disappointed in this farm. Apart from the sheep and the frogs, the animals have very little space and the farm is between two train tracks. The donkeys, that supposedly have a very sensitive audition according to one of the signs of the place, stay literally by the side of a track you can see it in one of the pictures. I imagine that the volunteers do all they can to help the animals, and I believe that there must be more funding and investment to care appropriately for the animals, but they need urgently to move the place away from the tracks and to give more space for the animals.
Absolutely love this farm, as bigger than expected and the little ones enjoyed the animals there. Will definitely be back in the summer!
Very cute and quaint city farm that has managed to tetris itself around some railway tracks. Perfect for a little outing. Free admission but PLEASE DONATE ! Finally got to meet Shirley and the other cute animals at the farm. From one city farm worker to another they're doing great but all the support is greatly appreciated if you are able!
It was a wet and dismal day when we visited, so the animals were mostly inside their barns and there wasn't anything in the upper fields. There was also a landslide at this end, so there are no horses there now either. It was slightly bigger than expected and had some signs of enterprise Cafe open later in the day and a Christmas fayre on tomorrow. All in all fairly basic, but probably not a great time of year to visit. Kids may be disappointed as you are not allowed to touch any of the animals, although I believe they have special times for that, so organise your visit if you want to include that.
It was very small, but I would still recommend going if you're in the area. You can't feed the animals or touch them and the horses aren't on site construction of their area, but overall it was lovely for a quick outing. It was a bit confusing at first because it looks closed and I don't remember seeing any staff. You just sort of walk in the unlocked door and look around on your own. You just have to wash your hands before entering and can sign a visitor book.
Growing club is awesome. We are currently building up the community garden. Lovely volunteers, nice and knowledgeable. Kids are welcome
Very good farm and it’s quite big too. They could do with more animal but they have a good collection of a few. The location is good located and free parking after 11 am so would recommend for family to take kids around and would go again.
I love it here, the atmosphere is really calming and the animals are all beautiful and so so sweet. The volunteers are all lovely too. Really recommend going to the farm to relax and meet some friendly animals. The meditating goats are my favorite. To the ones complaining about no horses, the horses are on holiday at the moment but will be back
