Kelly's Cellars

Story

Kellys Cellars is a pub in Belfast, Northern Ireland, situated at 30 Bank Street in the city centre. Built in 1720, it is one of the oldest pubs of Belfast. It sits in what used to be an alley way off Royal Avenue, but a few buildings were knocked down and now Kellys sits in a square beside Castlecourt, a major Belfast shopping centre. It provides pub food and traditional music sessions. It remains resolutely old-fashioned, with vaulted ceiling and elbow-worn bar and is crammed with bric-a-brac.HistoryKelly's Cellars is the oldest licensed premises in Belfast. The original two-storey pub was built in 1720 by Belfast merchant Hugh Kelly who kept it as a bonded warehouse in which rum, gin and whiskey were his mainstays. It was a meeting place for Henry Joy McCracken and the United Irishmen when they were planning the 1798 Rising. The story goes that McCracken hid behind the bar when British soldiers came for him. In September 2004 the pub had a grand re-opening under new management. In 2007 a blue plaque was erected on the site by the Ulster History Circle stating that the Society of United Irishmen met there during the period 1791 to 1798.Possible delistingIn February 2015 it was reported that the Department of the Environment (Northern Ireland) proposed delisting 17 Belfast buildings, including Kelly's Cellars, subject to review by the Historic Buildings Council and Belfast City Council. The Ulster Architectural Heritage Society declared that "despite their present condition, all buildings currently proposed for delisting contribute to the value of Belfast’s fragile built heritage and are important resources to promote tourism, economic investment and social regeneration". In March 2015 Belfast city councillors vowed to fight the Department of Environment over plans to remove protective listed status from Kelly's Cellars, now one of eight properties which the department has indicated that it plans to delist.

Beautiful pub and we met some super friendly folks hanging out there. The bat tenders are super cool and know how to have a great time. The liveliness of this place was refreshing and the overall history of it being the oldest pub in Belfast/Ireland was phenomenal. This pub has been around for 300 years and has survived through a ton of turmoil throughout the years. Highly recommend this spot for drinks and chillin! Enjoy the photos on the wall and all of the history of has to offer.
Gorgeous old gem hidden away in the heart of Belfast! Love how the authenticity is preserved and the building retains its rustic charm. Nice additional seating area outside, very helpful staff who were friendly and service was prompt. First visit here but without a doubt not the last!
Popped in here twice while in Belfast for a few days. Is a great pub, really enjoyed it. The staff are great, the locals great too which I always find great in a centrally located pub. The first time I visited was Sunday afternoon and there was some live music in which was great, the second time was Tuesday afternoon so was a little quieter, but still a very pleasant place for a drink. Probably my favourite pub frequented while in Belfast.
Enjoyed a good stew here and two pints if Guinness. Apparently, Belfast's second oldest pub? Not busy when I visited, so I enjoyed lunch and had a look round. A must if visiting the city
A friend took me here, first time ever being in here and I loved it. Loved the stone flooring, it's dark and the decor is just so old fashioned which really suited. They had outside seating and live music. It was a beautiful sunny day and the place was buzzing. Will be back for sure.
My friend told me that it's a must to visit this pub when you are visiting Belfast since it's one of the oldest pub in the city. I really enjoyed the ambience inside the pub, they played some traditional music during that evening. The staffs are friendly as well.
Came here on a recommendation from a bartender from another bar. This is a phenomenal establishment that's been around for 300 years. Live music on weekends and always a great crowd. Inside is a little tight with low ceilings but I guess that was 1720 irish architecture. Other than that, this place is a must.
A 10-inch pizza plus any pint for GBP12. Outdoor, covered seating available smoking allowed. Coal stove inside. I’m impressed that they offer a vegan pizza tomato sauce, black olives, bbq jackfruit, vegan cheese and nice crust, which I enjoyed. Good service. Vegetarian options: Vegan pizza.
Fab pub in the centre of Belfast city the staff are extremely friendly and very welcoming just sitting outside enjoying live music. One of the oldest pubs in Belfast
Great Irish stew. Definitely must visit the bar for a pint. It’s one of the oldest bars in Belfast.
