Absolutely wonderful bar, extremely well run with really friendly and helpful staff! Planning my event was effortless with Jordan taking care of all details and Jamie and the team running out flawlessly on the evening. Nothing was a problem, they were super attentive, helpful and kind despite it being the last Saturday before Christmas and very busy! Food came out on time and was delicious enjoyed by all guests. Was very surprised just how nice and easy going a plush bar in Upper Street could be, but this was it! Would definitely plan another event here in future. Highly recommend.
A rather nice venue with a mezzanine and bar upstairs definitely not pretentious but rather down to earth. The downstairs area is fairly spacious and able to double as a dancefloor too. They have good seating as well as several large TV monitors. The bar staff were all very friendly and efficient and the drinks are reasonably priced. They have a small indoor uncovered terrace doubles as a smoking area. I attended on a Saturday night when they also had a DJ on the ground floor playing a mixture of Club Classics, Dance and Pop. An enjoyable night was had by us all. Certainly a place to visit with friends on a night out.
I held a charity quiz in the mezzanine and the night was a success! A big part of the night was the great service from the staff, and big thank you to Duncan and Mirco for helping organise microphones and tables. The food, happy hour and the space in the mezzanine was perfect and everyone had a great night! Thank you again to the at John Salt Team.
Good place to chill with friends and you can even watch Wimbledon here. The lady at the bar is very helpful and welcoming. Though the chai tea I tried isn’t very good, their beer and cocktails might be nice probably?
Lovely staff, delicious 2x1 cocktails with lots of variety and great music – ideal spot for catching up with a friend. Thank you so much!!
Watched the football here, but each display was out of sync and there was no audio, which spoiled the experience and lead me to watch it on my phone. The bar staff were amazing considering there was only 2-3 of them and it's a great place to have a drink and catch up with mates
The cocktails were lovely, I unfortunately only had half a burger as I wasn't that hungry, but it was one of the best burgers I've had in a long while, I can't wait to go back.. Lucky we stumbled upon the his place
I went to this pub today with over a dozen friends for a pub lunch with the hopes of simply having some laughs, decent food, and good drinks. Thankfully we enjoy each others company loads because the pub itself let us down completely. The drinks were fine although most of us stuck with wine, so I really cannot comment on them much, but the food service was terrible. I believe there were 17 of us and out of those 17 about 13 of the dishes we received were cold. At first we gave the kitchen the benefit of the doubt and assumed that they were trying to serve our entire party at the same time, so they must have left a bunch of the plates out while waiting on the rest to be finished still not acceptable, but an understandable err in judgement. However, when half the table had finished their lukewarm meals or had asked to have them warmed in the microwave before the other half had even seen their food which also ended up being cold we knew that just was not the case. The servers and management had done nothing at this point to apologize or make up for the cold food we were given, and around this time is when we started noticing that a good number of the dishes we received did not even have their included sides for example, my friend ordered the macaroni and cheese which included red onion jam. When that was pointed out they simply brought her a small container of red onion jam, 20 minutes after she had finished her meal, which is completely unacceptable. When the head of our party finally confronted the server about what had happened he offered 50% off our meal and free dessert, because while we did not enjoy our lunch we were enjoying each others company and weren't in a hurry to leave. That seemed like a fair compromise and we accepted. We were also told that the reason our food was cold was because their lift wasn't working properly and because it was so windy they couldn't get the food to stay warm. As we were ordering dessert we first found out that one of the items on the limited menu sticky pudding which half of the party ordered wasn't available, but we were offered holiday pudding instead. At that point almost everyone switched to their hazelnut brownie and no one chose the holiday pudding. They clearly wanted to get rid of the pudding, because every one of us who had ordered the brownie had a large slice of it hidden under the fudge on top of ours. Thankfully no one in our group has any fruit allergies, but hiding food in order to get rid of it is extremely unethical. Then when it came time to pay the bill was suddenly higher than what we had agreed. Instead of taking 50% off they only took 50% off regular menu items and not their 2 for 20 menu and started talking about how they couldn't do it in their system, even though it was what was previously agreed upon. It wasn't until we brought up all of the problems with the deserts we were given and made it clear that we were not backing down that suddenly our originally agreement was respected again. There are so many ethical pubs in London with good food and drink, I would stay far away from this one and go just about anywhere else.
Great service and amazing place to work from!! Their space upstairs is very cosy and allowed me focus on work better than I’d do at the office. Fantastic!
I went here for the Europa League final - I regret this choice. Given the occasion, Islington as you'd expect was very busy and all pubs/bars were full of expectant Arsenal fans. John Salt seemingly didn't anticipate this; the bar was severely understaffed so the queue for a drink was infuriatingly long. The food was also a huge disappointment. We ordered the chicken and chorizo skewers and the chips, pulled pork, cheese sauce and salsa. It took 50 minutes to arrive and when it did it was cold and tasteless. The chips were ready salted crisps and the meat was freezing cold. I'd give this dish a 0/10. It was worse than it looks. Now to the viewing or lack thereof pleasure. To start, it was all streamed via YouTube. Wi-FI problems inevitably reared their ugly head and we were left with all screens at different times and skipping all over the place. One half of the bar ended up watching the game 15 seconds ahead of the other half. It was a complete mess. The audio was seemingly from a different source altogether, the commentary was way ahead of what I was watching. An Arsenal defeat in a rubbish bar. John is most definitely not worth his Salt.
