Inverclyde Royal Hospital

Story

Inverclyde Royal Hospital, which opened in 1979, is a district general hospital in Greenock which serves a large population area of 125 000 consisting of Inverclyde (including Greenock), Largs, Isle of Bute and Cowal Peninsula. Inverclyde is one of three main hospitals in the South Clyde area, alongside Vale of Leven Hospital in Alexandria and Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley and is both owned and run by NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde, previously NHS Argyll and Clyde.FacilitiesInverclyde provides many facilities including an A&E department, general medical and surgical inpatient beds, orthopaedics, ophthalmology and psychiatry. There is a three-bed intensive care unit and a four-bed high dependency unit and an eleven bed coronary care unit; providing a unique combined critical care unit. The Larkfield Unit, a five ward annexe to IRH, contains three geriatric medicine wards (including an acute stroke unit), a secure geriatric psychiatric ward, and a rehabilitation ward for patients with physical disabilities. However there is no consultant-led maternity unit at the hospital, only a midwife-led unit - consultant obstetric services have been based at the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley since 2003 - and there are no in-patient paediatric services. There are regular out-patient clinics in all medical and surgical specialties, obstetrics and gynaecology, and paediatrics.HistoryConstruction work started at the end on August 1970.Proposed downgradeInverclyde was initially going to face a big downgrade with the loss of the A&E department and acute surgical ward being re-located to the Royal Alexandra Hospital in Paisley which was to save as much as £40 million by the NHS Argyll & Clyde health board. Many criticised the plans complaining that the Inverclyde was being seen as nothing more than a large health centre; being allowed to run down and close and accessibility problems trying to get to the Royal Alexandra which would have been better suited at the Southern General if the go-ahead was given.

Fell and broke hip at home in Port Glasgow was transferred to Inverclyde Royal Hospital after hip operation Paisley. Arrived K North and all the staff were fantastic at looking after all the patients first class service can't fault it at all so would like to thank yous all for all the care I received x
I was sent to A and E by my GP. I was treated at the Medical Assessment Unit at IRH. From when I arrived till I left I was impressed with the level of service and professionalism displayed by all staff. I was seen pomptly, listened to and received wonderful treatment throughout. Thanks to all staff .
The place is nothing but a crumbling charnel house with insolent and incompetent doctors. The nurses in the main are nice and pleasant but some are downright evil. I'd rather die in the street choking in my own blood than go back there.
Had my hernia operation yesterday. The staff at all levels were outstanding. Friendly, caring, witty and professional. They deserve huge payrises as well as respect and admiration! Greatful patient.
I was in here in may and was told verbally after having a chest scan my heart was rubbing off my heart wall to be discharged without any treatment for this I then contacted my doctor who confirmed it wasent put in the medical report to the go either so since then I have been in sever agony having the same chest pain and this still hasn't been treated and we are now into September all in all I've had this and been up and down to other hospitals including for around 5 years and I also have diabetes type 2 and anemia now to this place is a joke I will not be going back and the staff are terrible
Appointment for 9.30 this morning and was seen early. Reception and processing all very efficient and friendly. Luckily was able to have the opportunity for surgey done straight away and was away home by 11.00. Brilliant "service" from nice people. Thank you so much.
After being at hospital since 630am waiting for my surgery the staff that I had the pleasure of meeting while taking care of me. Before, during and after my surgery was totally outstanding. Definitely deserve more credit for the work they do and a pay rise. Want to thank them all from the bottom of my heart for making me feel so comfortable during my stay.
Staff were great today with my boy Rio having his teeth out today. Thank you so much especially Gillian who looked after us x
I had the pleasure of working here and also have attended a good few times as a patient. The staff are over worked under paid but do a first class job. They all work long hours under extreme conditions, so please give thanks to all our hospital workers. You might have to wait long periods in A&E but everyone is doing their best to make life a little more comfortable for the sick people that attend.
