What an utter shambles. Cobden Chambers is doing such a brilliant job at supporting small businesses and new initiatives - the people working in this area are genuinely passionate about what they're doing and lovely to customers - I'd much rather give my money to one of the businesses here than elsewhere. The guy who owns this shop is the one exception, it's that's such a disappointing thing to find in a place like this. We stumbled in, started browsing. I was looking at something when I heard the guy suddenly say, very patronisingly to my friend, "You might not have seen the signs on your way up, phones aren't allowed in here". I can understand perhaps not wanting customers to take photos in the store but friend had just been on their phone innocently Googling something about what he'd just read about in the book he'd picked up. Anyway, he apologised and the kept looking at the book. THEN, the man came over to me and said, "What? ANOTHER PHONE?!" I wasn't even on my phone, and was just holding it in my hand. We were browsing while we waited for something and I was keeping an eye on the time, and also looking out for a couple of messages. What kind of a place has issues with you time keeping and messaging people? And it was dealt with terribly. I said to him, "I'm not even on my phone, I'm HOLDING it". What a patronising idiot. He spoke to us both like we were school children - plus, if you make it difficult for people to time keep and keep up with whatever's going on in the rest of the world while they're in your shop, people aren't going to want to spend time there. What is this, enter my shop and simultaneously enter a dystopian bubble?! Are we even allowed back out again?! Who does this idiot think he is?! 😂 Your shop is not the only place in the city selling these books, and I'm not parting with my money to support this. I'll get my book fix elsewhere! Can't wait for this business to go belly up and for the space to be filled with an initiative from people who know how to treat customers (the people at the Zero Waste Collective need a permanent space and are utterly lovely). What a snob.

We went in with my partner to look around for Christmas gift ideas, has been looking at several books and magazines for about ten minutes. The owner was very pushy trying to sell us something, so we told him we are just browsing. My partner sat down with one of the books she was interested in buying and wanted to see if the content was as good as the outlook of it, so she started reading the intro, when the owner came up to us and said "I hope you're not treating my shop as a library." We said "no, of course not." He replied "Would you like some help putting that book back on the shelf then?" So we left.. He had beautiful things in the shop and we were absolutely considering buying some things, but he made sure we would never. Worst service I have ever experienced.

Unfortunately an extremely pushy owner, which put me off completely. Rude, arrogant and makes you feel uneasy in the shop. Sad to see bad customer service when he has a good collection of books.

Lovely magazines, extremely rude owner. He was arrogant and demeaned customers. Would've loved to buy several of the magazines we saw if he hadn't openly accused us of 'single-handedly supporting child labor' by the Primark shopping bag in our hand and 'killing the recycling efforts of thousands' with the plane ticket we used to get to this country. His 'advice' on how people interested in his shop should live their life was unsolicited and definitely not appreciated. Also, if your phone is out at all, for any reason, you will be publicly shamed. Would have loved to walk in to this shop and been able to explore and admire the beautiful products and ideas presented within it, however, this shop owner seemed more keen to quickly convict potential customers rather than invite them in and show them the collection that he has passionately built.
