Hotel Continental

About

An idyllic seaside hotel in the picturesque town of Whitstable. Stunning sunsets too, a glass of wine and a steaming bowl of mussels, watching the sun set.

Story

Welcome to the Hotel Continental.

Located on the seafront in the idyllic town of Whitstable in Kent, we are a 23 bedroom sea front hotel with 13 converted 150 year old Fisherman's Huts. All of which are available for short term lets. We pride ourselves on providing an extremely unique and personal stay for all our guests and aim to give them the best chance to explore the wonderful charm and character that Whitstable has to offer.

We are owned by the Whitstable Oyster Co. Our bar serves Beers and Ales produced by our own micro-brewery, the Whitstable Brewery, as well as oysters from our own oyster beds.

We also have a 40-seat restaurant serving a classic menu, with a modern twist. Our menu changes regularly and ranges from Pan Fried local Oysters to Roasted Seabass on a Seafood Risotto to Aberdeen Angus Fillet Steak served with triple cooked chips.

We stopped in for coffee and a break from the relentless heat hottest day of the year. The coffee was delicious and as an added bonus it was served with a shortbread finger. We sat on large overstuffed comfy sofas and watched the world amble by. Excellent service, great location and we would like to come back for a meal one day, or maybe to stay overnight and wake up to an interrupted view of the sea.
A huge thank you to both Jo and Luke, for extending a warm welcome to the hotel, providing advice and guidance about where to visit and dine - all great recommendations, allowing us to enjoy the fabulously located, clean and completely unique Fisherman’s Huts to the fullest extent. Once we had left the property the following morning at dawn, leaving the key was easy but we sadly forgot several possessions on which Jo took the time to promptly notify us and arrange immediate return. Being from the Lake District as we are, ever conscious of the busy schedule and pressure that tourism places upon hoteliers and the wider team, everything in this regard seemed process driven and nothing was too much trouble. Cannot express our gratitude for being treated with such warmth and friendliness and we will definitely be back again. Jamie Rooms: Wooden shutters instead of curtains - wake up, pull this back and see the sea! Walkability: Everything is in easy access and walkable. Food & drinks: We found a place owned by the group there are many affiliated to the hotel which was lovely. Noteworthy details: We stayed in the uniquely located, characterful and stunningly presented “Fisherman’s Huts”, which gave a nod back to Whitstable’s heritage as, well… being a fishing town!
Hotel was clean and tidy and great location right next to beach. Staff were polite and welcoming. The room was a bit small but knew that from other reviews that we may have a small room. Looked forward to breakfast but a little disappointed as some items were over cooked for us. Would stay again but perhaps try and get a larger room. Rooms: Our room was a bit on the small side but did have a small balcony so we could open the doors to let air in at night as it was warm. As it was for one night it was adequate. The room was clean and tidy and modern plus point was the walk in shower. Nearby activities: Great selection of places to eat or drink including the hotel itself. Walkability: Local amenities were all walking distance. If your lucky to get a space in hotel car park great but we had to find a space on a local road. Food & drinks: Breakfast had a good choice however the bacon and sausages were overcooked and dry. Unless you like crispy bacon.
What a fun city and an excellent hotel. Its location is wonderful on the beach. It is important to ask for a room with a sea view and if possible also with a balcony. The food is delicious all the times we ate it. Next door is a wonderful cafe called the Bubble. I recommend the hotel and we will return for sureRooms: 4/5
We are on holiday in Whitstable for a few weeks and go to the hotel a couple of times a week for a drink and seafood chowder and some Sundays when the pianoman is playing. We went yesterday at about 6.30 pm and ordered our chowder. We were eating it when some new customers came and shared our table and went to order. They came back having stood in line at the bar only to find that food was off, kitchen closed. So, we kept an eye out and saw at least four separte groups come in, get a table and use the menu on it, go up to the bar ,wait to order and then be disappointed. Perhaps the situation could be managed somewhat differently. We will be back for our chowder but get there well before 7pm to make sure Noteworthy details: Good position on the edge of the harbour and High Street. Bus stop 75 metres away. Helpful and very empathetic waiters and waitresses.
We stopped off and had coffee for the adults and coke for the kids. It was a little bit expensive. It being the Bank Holiday, Whitstable was very busy. We were pleased to get a table so we could sit together. Pleasant surroundings, and we were entertained with singing and music on the piano. What more could you ask for. Thank youService: 5/5
I stayed in a Deluxe Seaview room with a shower at Hotel Continental, What a stay! Whitstable is a favourite place of mine and this is possibly one of the best stays I've had. The staff were friendly and helpful and location is perfection itself, not too far from town, harbour, castle and a very short walk to Tankerton beach. The room is everything I desire in a room. It is practical, trendy and decorated well to mix in well with the setting. The room is clean, tidy and has so many perks! I love how cupboard neatly houses the wardrobe and mini refreshment area Mini fridge, kettle, hair dryer. The bed is soft and comfortable. The shutters are brilliant and most perfect alternative to curtains. The room is full of natural light and I'm thoroughly smitten with it. Lots of socket spaces for various appliances. Desk area, with a mirror which cleverly extends out to apply makeup and so on. The room is well thought out. The balcony overlooks the sea and has two chairs, a table and 2 deck chairs. I'm not really a sea person as such but I may have been converted. It is a peaceful location to catch your breath away from the hustle and bustle of life. The breakfast included with a room is of good quality and locally sourced condiments etc. As a vegetarian, I was very happy with the choices. I thoroughly enjoyed taking my breakfast whilst watching the fishing boats going out. On the whole, I cannot speak highly enough of this wonderful hotel and encourage anyone to visit! A big shout out to all the staff, the food was superb, the room and hotel is clean and tidy and everyone is very welcoming. I will certainly be returning!! Rooms: Rooms are clean, tidy and spacious. Nearby activities: Harbour offering boat rides, short walk into town, Castle and gardens, Tankerton beach. Rail Station 10-15 minute walk, nearby buses into Canterbury.
“Don’t Book If You’re A Light Sleeper” My wife was given the impression she booked our room in the main hotel located by the seaside. Instead we were given a lodging that was a 10 minute walk away and with no seaside view. It was however a nice 2 level small apartment style lodging called “Jo Cottage” with a view of the lodging directly across. and was above a narrow road that had vehicles driving by below 24/7 that included buses and trucks lorries that were SO LOUD OUR ROOM SHOOK. I’m very serious. Add that to the fact there was NO AIR CONDITIONING and NO TELEPHONE. Even though it was less than a minute’s walk to the lovely quaint shops and restaurants… We will DEFINITELY NOT RETURN to this establishment. Be warned. Safety: Because there is no telephone in the lodging - this made us feel unsafe as our cell phones were limited with data plans. And we had a situation where a belligerent guest took our parking spot and I had to walk all the way to the main hotel to get support. Later that evening there was a pounding at the door - fortunately it was an inebriated woman who was at the wrong cottage. We thought it was the previously mentioned hotel guest who took our parking spot and was told to vacate it.
I could be a little selfish as the Continental is where we live. The hotel is overlooking the sea in some of the rooms. The food is freshly served, lunches are excellent or you can drop by for a tea or coffee Tabitha the bar and restaurant manager is lovely and leads a happy team in their high standard of service Rooms: Exquisite Nearby activities: Whitstable Harbour, bowling alley, watersport, boat trip's
Our 3rd stay at The Hotel Continental and won't be our last. They do a lovely freshly cooked breakfast. We ate in the restaurant one evening during this stay and had fresh oysters followed by the catch of the day cod beer battered with chunky chips which were both lovely. The kitchen in open plan so you can see everything being prepared for you. Its a fairly short stroll into the town from here if you go to the left or you can follow the coastlines flat paved walk on the right towards Tankerton with pretty beach huts along the way which is very popular with dog walkers and runners too.On our final evening we were treated to a beautiful sunset across the sea viewed from the hotel.
