The hope and anchor inn should stick to the bar and restaurant and forget the hotel aspect. The room is incredibly noisy and loud music plays in the bar downstairs until 1am at weekends. Every time someone flushes the toilet or has a shower it can be loudly heard from the room. The room was very dirty, with dust everywhere in particular down the sides/under the bed and remnants of the last guests in the room. The toilet didn't flush properly and the milk we were given with tea/coffee was well past the sell by date. We phoned before we made our booking saying that we had two bikes with us and would require storage and was told that would be no problem. Throughout our one night stay it was then a constant battle to keep our bikes inside the building despite the heavy rain and several times it was suggested the bikes 'would be fine' out on the main street. Eventually the bikes were kept overnight in the dining room. The breakfast was nice and served in a well decorated dining room. £80 for this room would be a robbery, luckily we paid £60 but still felt thoroughly ripped off.

Comfortable bed is the most important, clean and decent bathroom with strong shower the next. Friendly staff, decent service and quality options for breakfast. This place had all of the above and with continued redevelopment will only improve. Saying all that, the area looked a bit sketchy on first arrival, but once welcomed by the bar staff and shown a room it was fine. Not great views, but that car park is useful. The Rose and Crown next door was a classy but pricey option for an evening meal. I hope the issue with hot water was a one off.

Nice place to stay, rooms are clean staff are very friendly and it's perfect over night stay for a ferry crossing as it's right next to the harbour. Great breakfast and soft and comfortable beds. Good location too! Would stay again and recommend! - Wish we'd avoided the chip shop on the corner and ate at the Anchor and Inn instead as the food smelt lush.
