HMP Norwich is a multi-functional prison, predominantly serving the Courts of Norfolk and Suffolk. The prison has occupied its current site overlooking the city of Norwich since 1887.
B and C wings were opened in 1996 and were classified as a category C training unit from April 1999. M wing was opened in 1997, and was designated as a resettlement unit from April 1999.
A further resettlement unit (Britannia House) was established outside the main gate. F and G wings accommodated male adult and young adult prisoners until 1998, when they were converted to a young offender institution. In August 2004, an older prisoners’ unit was established for life-sentenced prisoners.
In September 2009, the new A wing was opened and adult prisoners and young offenders were integrated across the prison. The prison was then designated a reception site for adults and young adults when they first arrived in custody and a local discharge unit (LDU) to cater for short-sentenced prisoners from the local area.
