Heckington Windmill

Story

Heckington Windmill is the only eight-sailed tower windmill still standing in the United Kingdom with its sails intact.Heckington is located between Sleaford and Boston in Lincolnshire, England. The mill stands very close to Heckington railway station, hence its name of the Station Mill in the 19th century. The windmill is designated a Grade I listed building.ConstructionIt was built in 1830 to plans by millwright Edward Ingledew for her first owner and founder Michael Hare of red brick, the outer walls being tarred, as a five-sailed windmill with Sutton's single patent sails providing longitudinal shutters on both sides of the backs . The mill has six storeys called "floors": ground floor, meal floor, stone floor, lower bin floor, upper bin floor, dust or cap floor.

Called today 25 10 17 at 2 30pm - half term for schools, to visit windmill only to find it was closed. Gentleman in windmill told us we should have looked on the internet for opening times, he also stated that it was only open in school holidays yet your web site says open daily 12 -5pm. On returning home we looked on internet to find it says OPEN TODAY. This is the second time on ad hoc basis we have tried to visit. Only to find it closed. The café also closed....not enough is being made of the facilities which could be a boon for Heckington especially on a Sunday morning for morning coffee or breakfasts. NO STARS REWARDED HOWEVER HAD TO PUT ONE TO POST

Very interesting even though site was being refurbished so a bit untidy. I need to pluck up the courage to go upstairs next time! Update: site much more accessible, tea shop up and running. And I went upstairs and it's good up there.
